  1. Help on suburban layout?

You could try putting in some more diagonal/curved streets/roads. I also like to put cul-de-sacs every so often, and how 'bout some open grass and trees behind the houses? There are also several tutorials on suburbs in the Omnibus.
  2. How to get area 51

I think there is an alternative way other then the UDI or "You don't deserve it". I've heard if you play a city on hard difficulty setting you can earn it through mayor mode.
  3. SC4

After you download the buildings, extract them to your My Documents/SimCity4/Plugins folder. If there is an installer included, run it, and always read the readmes as they may specify if there are any dependencies.
  4. How do you begin your region?

I always start with what's going to be a neighbor city of my main city, throw a couple of zones down, build it up a bit, then I have increased demand for my main city, and I can quickly build it up. After the main city is built up a bit, I go into the other neighbor cities and build them up, too. Then I go back into my main city and the cycle repeats. I usually don't terraform much until the cities are built up, then I terraform the area around it and expand from there.
  5. Grids make a city real?

Omaha is practically all grid, only in the outer suburbs does it get curvy. As another member said before, "You can never get lost in Omaha!" When I build my cities, I like to use grids in the downtown areas, and I also use some in the midtown areas, and then I just let the streets and roads go freeform in the suburbs.
  6. SC4

Other then that, good post. Other things you should look at are all the great BATs on the STEX. There are plenty; I like to choose the ones I like, then I download 'em. Some of these downloads require dependencies, like what was said before. Make sure you download all the dependencies before you try the download in-game, because it might cause crashes, glitches, etc.
  7. Optimal zone size?

  8. Originally posted by: txrailnut07 I plan on doing 5 post offices and a processing/distribution center, all as rewards. 9. Cities XL: Bendy Roads!!!

I wonder if the zones will be able to conform to the curved/bendy roads? That would be very interesting and neat. It would also be nice if they had some W2W buildings, for downtowns with straight roads.
  10. Originally posted by: mrjoehobo it would nice to have post oficesquote> Yes it would, but the only ones I can find are too small, or are massive, or are just Maxis buildings put in a wierd combination, but that would be a really good idea for a new BAT.
  11. Well, most towns do have churches, even small ones. I can garuntee you that alomst every town in this area has at least one church. My hometown has plenty, almost one every two blocks. I just wish there was more variety in SimCity 4 for churches. As far as post offices, I can't garuntee every town has a one of those...
  12. Creating a New Disaster

In my experience, Ctrl-Alt-S saves the game, or at least that's how it is on my PC. Regardless, those tips are still good, and if you do all of the things mentioned in the above post, you should be able to take some pretty decent pictures.
  14. How to lower commute time.

  15. Originally posted by: Steamrobin And beside this, I wonder if someone did a post-office as plugin...quote> I'm sure there are some post offices on the STEX. Just search for "post office" and you'll probably find one. I also wish there were more variety in churches instead of that boring "House of Worship", which is the only one in the game. (other than custom content)

  17. How to lower commute time.

Have you got the NAM? And if you've upgraded streets to roads, have plenty of MT, yet still have issues, you'll probably have to tear down some residential and put some commercial/industrial in it's place. By the way, please don't post the topic title in all caps.

Originally posted by: Nihar1 this is part of my city, may not be scenic, just give me your opinion!quote> I can't really see it, so I can't give my opinon. But if you want to show off your senic areas, you really should post in this thread.
  19. Why not put a police station in your city to reduce the rioting? Anyway, I bet the kids have fun playing in the landfill after school!
  20. Beaches closed for stolen sand investigation

  21. Originally posted by: bigthing Are you sure its a 4-way junction. They dont work on 3-way's.quote> Yeah, the turning lanes only show up at a 4-way junction, so you might want to check if you have any 4-way junctions with avenues.
  22. My rich sims are jobless... please help

If you haven't already, get the NAM. It helps alot with commute times.
  23. The most scenic city I ever built

Those brown boxes mean you're missing dependencies from something you downloaded, and it looks like you are missing a lot of them.
  24. How do you get skyscrapers?

Originally posted by: Muddlerman There was one region I just completely dezoned and rezoned, and only then did I get one of those 6,000 job skyscrapers. Insurance to grow, which I never did before. Now I gotta get that darn Hurt Enterprise Headquarters to grow; it's the only Maxis Building I haven't got to grow yet.
  25. how many still use rails?

I always use some form of rail. EL-rail, GLR, subway, heavy rail... I can garuntee that in every one of my cities, I have at least one of those forms of rail. Lately though, I've been using more rail than I usually do, with all of those mentioned above in my newer cities. I've never used heavy rail much, but now I'm starting to use it more and more, with one citiy having a monopoly of lines and tunnels, with several stations to accomadate them. This is also realistic, as most major cities today have a railraod running through them. I don't, however, like to use those heavy rail to elevated rail connections, though, as I don't find that to be realistic. I know it can connect every form of rail together, but it just doesn't look right to me.
