A similar, yet different, crisis happened in Australia in 1975, known infamously as "The Dismissal". The Governor General dismissed the Prime Minister and invested the Opposition Leader as the new Prime Minister, who immediately called an election, which his party won. It's definitely worth a read in the context of this crisis, but be warned: it's very, very complicated and could melt your brain! The_Dismissal

I assume it's similar to or the same as our system in Australia. We elect our local representatives, who may be party members or independant. Once everyone is elected, whoever has the majority of seats in the house takes government (because, of course, any motions or laws can be passed by their majority). What is happening here, if I am right, is this new coalition that has banded together now outnumbers the government's seats and has majority seats in the house. So nobody is being impeached or fired, but the government has lost their legislative power by losing control of the house. Any Canadians may correct me, of course!

The Role of Various Countries in World War II
mightymightychatham replied to Meg's topic in Current Events
The Norwegians have alot to be proud of. In my opinion, the invasion of Norway, the stand taken by King Haakon VII, his subsequent rescue by the Royal Navy and his government in exile, and the Norwegian resistance and industrial slow down of occupied Norway are some of the most interesting events of the war. Not to mention the repeated attempts to sink the Tirpitz in the fjords. -
The Role of Various Countries in World War II

Hi! I'm not a regular contributor to these forums (a lurker, if you will). I am also neither an American nor European. However, I am a fairly keen student of history, so here is my own conclusion on the topic. Sure, the USA was able to turn the tide on the Axis powers in Western Europe after they were stalled by the Brits. But let's face it; neither the Americans nor the British nor the Russians could have done it without each other. As to the argument of "who saved who and won what." The British suffered bomber attacks on it's people, rockets fired at them from France and fighting in the skies over it's cities. Yet still they fought tooth and nail for years to keep the agressors out and eventually, with the help of their allies, won the war. There is a certain amount of pride attached to an ultimate victory from such a deperate defence that gets hurt by those that try to take full credit "we saved your ass" or belittle the achievement by saying they weren't a key player. The Americans were attacked by surprise, somewhat unprepared, but still managed to fight back and eventually deliver most of the final blows to the Axis powers. There is a certain amount of pride attached to this as well, understandably it would be frustrating when those it helped in their time of need denied the part they played! So before we argue about who played the bigger role and whose country is best, let's just be thankful of the right outcome in one of the few just wars in this planets history. It could have very easily been different. Then there would be no argument, would there? OK, that's enough of the high horse for one day. -

What's the population of your hometown?

My hometown is Millicent, SA, Australia. Approx population 5,200 I now live in Adelaide, SA. I'm told the population is around 1,400,000. -
Sadly, the great, free country that I love is dying. This is just another step down that road. I think it was Benjamin Franklin that wrote: "Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both."
