Civitas, an interesting Citybuilder project
LTParis replied to Tramwhet's topic in General Off-Topic
I waited ages for the latest SimCity to come out and it seems to be a failure. Instead, I contributed to the Civtas kickstarter effort. -
I haven't had a chance to play SC4 for ages, and I just now seeing SC5/SC(2013) is indeed real. Color me surprised and elated. Then I see they are not considering OS-X for the initial rollout, which make me disappointed. I have switched over to a Mac household and not sure if I really would want to build out a new rig to play literally just one game. :/

They are a consequence of culture, but it's was a culture that was enabled by a pretty much roads-only policy for decades. As people escaped to the burbs to live the so-called American dream they began to live more and more isolated lives. Everything had to be gotten to by cars, everything became a big box store, tons and tons of wasted space. Then as the burbs became crowded we built more roads to reduce the congestion, but all we did was encourage even more flight away from the cities. And in doing so even our health deteriorated because hell we can just drive to get to everywhere. Questionable. If you live somewhere where a house can be obtained for $200,000 or less it would be compared to rent, but as the prices go higher the value of owning a house is less and less. Plus you deal with all the stress of ownership. Again that American dream that was sold to everyone True but there are a lot of studies showing public transit to be more efficient and cost effective. Not quite true. There are a lot of near-city neighborhoods like White Flint MD that are revamping their whole area into a New Urbanist model. Quite true, but then some places they do try to revitalize. In DC they took a real run down area of North East (high crime too) and redid it and rebranded it NoMA. Every city/region needs to find the right balance.

I feel I have let everyone down. Been nearly a year and I have literally had no time to play.

I hope this pans out into something great. I got in on Cities XL and it was almost unplayable and I've just reverted back to SC4. Here is to hoping for at a minimum a complete product!

Editors Note: This is the third CJ I have created. The first two were of the Washington DC area which unfortunatly did not last long thanks to time. I am going to try to update this CJ as frequently as possible. Also note that some imagery that is seen (particularly in the newsletter) is not of Sim City 4 sources, but other sim games to help give some depth and interest in the newsletter. I hope you enjoy! History Necarta is a newly formed incorporation of many little towns spread across the area. Sandwitched by two larger cities to the North and South, the region went largy undeveloped and the only real sign of life is on the Eastern Quadrant where Interstate-99 Bisects the area. Newsletter Published below is the cover for Issue 001 of The Necarta Record. This is a periodical to give inisght into the news, sports, and lifestyle of the region. I hope you enjoy the content. It's been quite a while since I played CS4, but I started to get an itch to play again, and after a brief play with CXL I have loaded up SC4 on the new PC and realized just how many tweaks need to be done to get some good custom content in there. So my real desire is transit tweaks (RR, roads, subway, etc), custom landscaping (underground design), and of course good ol' exchange lot add ons. Is there a good primer to get me back to speed?

So far my brief play is disappointing. The refinement is seemingly non-existent, mouse zoom over touchy, text nearly impossible to read, and while you can do non-straight roads the other lacking transportation elements is a real bummer. I hope further patches can improve on it.
-
Well since it's $24 at Steam I might as well give it a shot.

I had been so busy with work lately that the release of CXL didn't catch my eye. I had been eagerly waiting for it's release, and after reading some new reviews I have some questions, specifically if I should stick with SC4 for now or make the jump to CXL. a) I am a casual city builder. I love to build the infrastructure, love to plan a city out, but frankly I have never gotten into the hyper-micro-management of SC4. I love to build out the zones, love to build out city limits and country roads. Will I get a better experience with CXL? b) I loved to grab custom lots in SC4. Does CXL lack this lot exchange or is there a similar builder and exchange to tweak the city to your desires. c) I have read a lot of bad on the solo part of CXL and while I would love to participate in a MMO like I did in WoW, I just don't think I will have the time for that aspect of the game. Is the general comments about solo play unfounded?

Funny how in 24 hours I learned about SCS (and so far I am not excitied about it) and then found this thread about CU (and so far I am very excited about it). your initial shots are amazing looking and I know that this community is looking for the realism angle that SCS seems to be lacking. Do you know how much longer it will be before some information is released on some of the features (e.g playability, transportation, etc.)? Are you looking to do a 2008 or 2009 release? Inquiring minds want to know. Kudos on this effort and if the game plays as nice as the screenshots are i think you have won over many hearts and minds!

How do you feel about the SCS announcement?
LTParis replied to Dirktator's topic in City-Building Games
I hadn't played SC4 is a good while. Between a stint of playing WoW, work, having a new kid my time got very limited. My wife had bought S2: bon Voyage and they had an ad for SCS so I naturally had to come here and lo and behold the preview was out. I am utterly disappointed in the game. I didn't mind that they were going for more simplifed gameplay but I was hoping that there would be a hybrid-play style that allowed the SC4-type crowd to really get into the game. SCS does not deliver in any regards to that and I fear that SC5 will never see the light of day. *sigh* -
Future of SimCity Official Discussion Thread
LTParis replied to Compromise's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I think that since there seems to be a new direction brewing, I would hop that it would trend towards this: Multiple 'types' of play. Simple / Moderate / Complex Smaller total region size if it allows for more micro-city details More flexibility in road and RCI designs More random 'realistic' disasters Better terraforming engine -
