Issues with people wanting to work in cities next door
exterminator replied to jcspartan117's topic in SC4 Showcase
maybe you could post a picture of your city, and a picture of your region. That way we could see if there's something wrong. A picture of the traffic network in your region would also be helpfull -
sorry that i post twice, but i didn't know if it would work, posting pics offsite with imageshack As you could see (or not ), i have two terminals. One for the arrivals (right) and one for the departures (bottom). I don't know if that is a practical advantage, but i tought i could be cool. now i have some more detailed pictures: Here you can see how the highways are split up into one-way roads to direct traffic to the two terminal buildings. The terminals are not on the image.. The arrivals are at the top right corner. Departures at top left corner. You can see that there's a big train station to. There's only one, so there's an avenue going to the arrivals and to the departures. To get to the departures, it has to go underground... The other avenue that is going underground just in front of the trainstation (but in the other direction -- right) is going to some parking areas. There are also some monorail stations and bus stations connected to the avenues. This is a closer look at the traffic junction for the departures. There's a road that's going underground. that one is leading to a parking lot for airport personnel. There's an ID control booth so nobody else can get there. The avenue that's coming "out of the ground" and that's leading to the busstation is the one that came from the trainstation. The other underground avenue is also going to some parking area's. The departures hall is included in this picture The departures terminal buildings and the control tower Arrivals terminal and hall This is also a traffic junction. From each adjacent city tile, there's a monorail and/or a train track coming. There's also an highway coming from each adjacent city. This is the cargo area. You can see a road going next to it and going under. This road is only accessible for airport personnel and is going almost entirely around the airport. The tunnel is there to connect the control tower, that is in the middle of the landing strips. This is the main parking area. There are long term, multiple storey parkings, short term parking lots and underground parkings. You can also see the road to the personnel parking coming up, on the left side. This is the personnel parking area. There's a bus that brings the people where they have to be, so they can leave their cars on the parking lot. Thats why there has to be a road around the airport. Hope you like my airport. Comments are welcome (not too negative please )

I always start with building a power plant and some water towers. That way, i don't forget it Next is to build some highways. They are expensive so i only build parts of them in the areas where i want to start devellopping my city. I always start near the borders, so i can connect my highways to other city tiles. I NEVER connect roads to other cities as they are not big enough to support the traffic. When i want my sims to commute to another tile, they have to use highways or mass transit. When my highway is there, i start building an onramp with avenues. from there i can start zoning some low density res and soms commercial. I also zone soms industrial, but not much, and far away from the res and comm areas. I don't place any police, fire or hospital. But i do place a school. That way, i start educating my sims. If you educate them, they become smarter, so they start looking for other jobs. It's very handy if you don't want those big polluting factory's, but only the nice HT industry. It's also good for your comm office demand. But don't expect it to work immediatly, irl it also takes some time to educate a person So in the beginning i only place the neccesary stuff, no parks, no "pretty" things, just basic. That way it is easy to make some money. Oh yeah, i forgot to mention that i place monorail to, and railways. Altough i'm not a huge fan of the railways I always make sure that i place enough avenues so i don't have to demolish later when traffic becomes a problem. I use the road top bus/metro stops.

So I Got My City to 99,000, Whats Next?
exterminator replied to usapatriot's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
If you want a population boost, you should start building on new city tiles. Make some connections to them with highways, monorail, rail. That alone will give you some demand. Did you place the major league stadium? It gives a pop boost of 75.000 i guess. Also placing tennis courts gives you a population boost. The key to have a big population is region play....
