  2. Worst City Planning

I know the two opposite ends of the spectrum. On the disorganized planning, you have Guadalajara, Mexico. On the good planning, you have

People are like electric current and they follow the path of least resistance. They will use it only if the other alternatives are worse, much worse. quote> True to that. I'm from Guadalajara, Mexico, which is also a city made for driving. Everybody owns a car. Too poor to afford a car? No problem, just buy a clunker smuggled from the States! And this happens to the point that you see neighborhoods with more plates from California and Texas than plates from Jalisco. Traffic congestion levels are similar to Mexico City, and that's saying a lot. Now, combine this with a ragtag bunch of large vans they call "buses"... and well, when I got my first job I didn't mind spending 25% of my paycheck in fuel, then when I decided to save money for a computer, every single day at one point I facepalmed terribly hard while thinking "god, what saving $80 monthly on gas costs...". On top of that, people from Guadalajara drive similar to people from Tampa. Add to this that, in Mexico overall, those who drive large vehicles don't drive more carefully because they're harder to control, they drive them more recklessly because they're tougher! Needless to say, people die in the streets all the time... Also: in downtown Paris, chances are you'll see a lot of luxury cars, because parking is so scarce and the Métro, the bus and the RER trains are so plentiful and are taken so seriously, that driving in Paris is literally a luxury. Coming from a city where public transportation is less than a joke, I find this incredibly awesome.
