  1. A mod said to go ahead and post this here, so yeah... Whenever Cities XL tries to start on my system, I get an "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0150002). Click OK to close the application." error. Another user mentioned there was a patch for this on the Cities XL beta page, but seeing as how that's down... does anyone else possibly have it already? And just wondering, is anyone else getting this error? Big thanks to those who can help.
  2. Is space/time travel possible? Looking at the surface of it, no, if it existed, we would have started noticing things - a "time travel police force" would not be able to keep it a secret from people in the past. In fact, the whole space/time continuum might be broken from it. Looking at it deeper, it could actually exist, but we all have timelines. There are many possible things that could happen in a timeline that can effect everything i.e. I could choose to go eat pringles or get a drink. As I result I could end up dying from choking, and what if I was to be the next president or something? The timeline veers off into another path. If time travel really did exist, no one would ever know about it because going back in time would create a path, but in a separate dimension? So people there would know, but they'e in the time traveler's dimension? And traveling back to where the person came would be impossible, because that time does not exist yet in that dimention? So if you wanted to do it actually successfully, you would have to figure out how to travel back and forth the same dimension (which might be a tad hard since there are so many dimensions). But, if you did do it correctly, what happens? if you change anything major, anything past that event could just go poof. PS: I say "space/time" travel because if you just traveled back in time, you're likely to end up in deep space, at the center of the earth, halfway in a tree, or something.... everything moves over time. Just some theories. What do you think? Sorry if I sound like a complete idiot.
  3. Please PM TV-VCR if you have any questions about this article. Three things you will need: Latest version of NAM (windows), (Mac) Ground digger/lifter lots (Optional) BRF Tunnel and Slope Mod Basics First off, make sure you know where you want your highway to go. You can do this by placing numbered signs on the terrain. Next, go into your transportation menu and find the ground lifter lot. Place one on the ground, and then run a road through it. After that, demolish the lifter lot, and place a single piece of road (or street) on what was the location of lot. Expand it out by placing pieces of road next to the original piece. Now, here comes an optional part. 15m is bit high for this kind of highway, no? If you wish, you can lower the terrain slightly, and use the same road-placing technique I described above. After that, at each sign you put down, Put three road tiles two tiles from the left of the already raised terrain. The three more tiles one tile from the raised terrain. Put three tiles in the center. Once you're done with that, continue raising the terrain with the road tile technique in a straight line until you reach the three tiles. The three tiles should automatically raise up with the other tiles. Now begin using the road tiles to raise the terrain, although shift the placement so that you're heading in the direction you want to go. Lather, rinse repeat. Now, you're probably wondering "What about diagonals?" No worries. When you reach a an area where you want to go diagonal, lay out those three road tiles in the center, but keep shifting them one tile in the direction you want to. You can see how I did that here. Not that you may need to separate them a bit. Once you're finished, the rest is a cakewalk! Observe the magic. Underpasses Now let's do some underpasses. Mark a good point where you would like the underpass to be. On where the road/avenue/street/one way will be, use the road tile technique to even out the terrain for 4x4 tiles on each side, as you can see here. Once again, use the ground lifter lots. Make sure not to put the lots on the already raised terrain! Put road through them, even it out, and it should look like this: On this section, we're going to smooth things out for a realistic incline. It's harder to do this without the slope mod (it can still be done, though). Select the rail. Demolish the highway around the area. From the road tiles, drag the rail down until you reach an end of the raised terrain (if there is a curve). Then, lay down more rail adjacent to the one you just laid down. Get rid of the rails and the two road tiles on each side. Go into the highway menu. Select Custom Interchanges. Tab through the pieces until you find the one titled Straight Highway OnSlope. Place it on each end. Replace the highway on both ends. Warning: I've found SC4 to be quirky with this part. If you can't seem to be able to place the ramps, try demolishing the Straight Highway OnSlope pieces, then place the ramps, then replace the OnSlope pieces. Bam. An underpass. Just do the same here for streets and one way roads. Bear in mind, that for other forms of transportation, such as rail, the gap doesn't have to be as big because there is no need for ramps. For avenues, you'll need to make the gap 5x4, not 4x4, because the ramps are longer. And finally, you certainly wouldn't leave the area vacuous now would you? Hope this helped!
  4. You can discuss any issues related to running SC4 in Linux here. Omnibus article: https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=147&threadid=100866&enterthread=y
  5. I have watched and heard of other people doing this before so I know it is possible. The only 3D program I've ever really worked with has been Sketchup, and I've been itching to put some of my buildings into SimCity But it seems I will need to import them into Gmax to go from there. The problem is, whenever I try to import the .3ds file, I get my fav message: I am in fact exporting the files from Sketchup as .3ds. Here's what I see: Help would be appreciated.
  6. What are some insane buildings/structures you've seen? I'd have to say this thing: I know it's by Ingels, but I don't know the name or location of the building. It's pretty nuts. I wonder what would happen if an earthquake hit? then again, if the towers are truly joined, they might hold themselves together during a quake or some other disaster? Nor am I sure how they put elevators into it... maybe they used curved elevators? It's possible. Chris.
  7. The LHC going online

The Large Hadron Collider is activating tomorrow (specifically at 08:30 UTC). Discuss. Oopsies, my mistake, it's not activating until next month. Sorry. http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/2352/lhcjp1.jpg
  8. The backwards thread

Ok guys, stop arguing. You can obviously see from the photo it's a blanket, not a ghost. I recommend a moderator lock this thread. Note: I'm joking with the "lock this thread" line. We're going backwards in time with this thread.
  9. Norton

Since when did Norton stop being such a pile of crap? I mean, normally the scans would take 5 hours and also make the computer unusable. Updating took at least half an hour. The program was, well, stupid. Detection was lackluster. And the firewall was useless. Totally different story with NIS09. Did Symantec realize they were going off the deep-end?
  10. Odd computer habits

What are some relatively out-of-the-norm computing habits you have (whether it be with your OS or the system itelf)? - I almost never put anything on my desktop (unless it's temporary). - I shift-delete almost everything (sometimes to my dismay). - I know what Ctrl+Shift+Esc does and use it often (it's surprising how many people don't know that this command even exists). - I rarely delve into the start menu (on both windows and linux OSes). - I clean the exterior of my computer almost daily, and the interior once every week.
  11. Now that I'm fully awake, this conversation I had seems a lot more interesting than I thought now... well, it was almost a one way conversation when I think about it... what do you think? I thought it might be a good base for a thread. (I'm velcrosnap) What do you think? Is a system based on logical handling of resources better than currency? Or am I wrong?
  12. Swats BATs

Looking good so far! Can't wait to see the end result.
  13. The ST 6.0 Department of Technical Affairs

In the profile settings page, all of the entries in the Province/State field are listed twice (i.e. "The Yukon, The Yukon, Alabama, Alabama, Alaska, Alaska, Arizona, Arizona," and so on).
  14. Shark Week

"Shark Week" has been recurring for over 20 years now. Basically, *drum roll* it's a week where practically all of the programming is shark-centric. A LOT of people watch it actually. Personally I think it's a bit overblown, but each to his or her own!

  16. Slower growth

I just usually tax the royal crap out of them, but to just the point that the majority leave, not all (this varies between city and city). Was here anything more specific you wanted to accomplish?
  17. How do install?

Unzip the archive (right click on the .zip file and select the extract option), then move the resulting files into your C:\Users\[you]\Documents\SimCity 4\Plugins folder. Also, just some advice... First, always read the readme. Sometimes they can contain critical information (such as you have to install it to a different directory). Second, try to keep your plugins folder organized. Third, with .exe or .msi files, run them and follow instructions, don't just place them into the plugins folder (people have done this before).

  19. This is pretty interesting. SC4 RH is refusing to install on my computer. When I start either AutoRun.exe or SETUP.EXE, the UAC prompt appears, I hit OK, it loads, then it just quits out after a few seconds (looking at the task manager). I've even tried disabling UAC To no avail, using a different CD/DVD drive, all possible compatibility modes, etc. I should note that sometimes I also get error messages (sometimes I don't though - that's also the only time I received a sharing violation error, which means it was in use by another program I think) The disc is spotless. The autorun does manage to start when running it in an XP virtual machine. I'm using Vista 32bit SP2. I haven't encountered this before. Anyone have any ideas?

I should probably mention I installed vanilla SC4 without any issues.

It's still possble to create an MS-DOS boot diskette from a floppy even in Windows 7 (although this "Version" of MS-DOS is quite watered down, as it's intended use is for aiding in system recovery and such). Why on earth you'd want to continue using DOS, I've no idea.quote> ...because I still have programs I use (games, mostly) that run on DOS. quote>
  22. SC4 is slow. Very slow. Slow enough to make it near impossible to work in developed areas. I have the latest SC4 version (640). I have Nvidia driver version 185.85 (latest). I've tried running without any plugins installed, and it's still horrendously slow. System specifications: Nvidia 8800GTX 768MB, Intel D975XBX2 motherboard, 4GB of ram, M-Audio Delta 1010LT sound card, Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit. Currently what I've deemed to be the cause are the newer Nvidia drivers. On my older vista install, I don't remember the specific driver (178? I know it was 17x.xx) , and SC4 FLEW. I could move around a very highly-detailed area, going along at over 40 FPS. Now with the newer drivers, it drags along at 3 FPS in these areas, making managing my cities a painstaking process. I should note that no, downgrading to those drivers is not an option. There have already been multiple newer versions since then, and also since then, the infamous "The display driver has stopped responding and recovered" has been fixed. There is no chance that I'm going back to getting those errors daily. Also not an option is going to software rendering mode. While it does improve FPS by around 15, the graphics quality trade-off is far too great. Any suggestions...?
  23. North Korea has staged a "successful" underground nuclear test, the state-run KCNA agency reports. The agency says Monday's test was "aimed at strengthening its [North Korea's] self-defence nuclear deterrent in every way". The news confirms earlier reports by South Korea's Yonhap news agency. South Korea's president is reported to have convened an emergency security meeting and Japan is setting up a task force in the prime minister's office. The South Korea has set up a "crisis management" team of officers at general-level. Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kazuo Kodama said Tokyo would respond to the test "in a responsible fashion" at the UN, without giving further details. The European Union has said that the development is "very worrying". South Korea's stock market fell 4% on the news, over fears that regional tensions would rise. Second test On Monday, the KCNA report said that "the current nuclear test was safely conducted on a new higher level in terms of its explosive power and technology of its control". It said the results resolved "scientific and technological problems arising in further increasing the power of nuclear weapons and steadily developing nuclear technology". The report gave no details of the location of the test. However, South Korean officials said a seismic tremor was detected in the north-eastern part of the communist state. Both South Korea's and the US geological agency said the tremor indicated a nuclear explosion. North Korea conducted its first nuclear test in October 2006. Last month, Pyongyang pulled out of six-party talks on its nuclear programme, in protest against international condemnation of its test-firing of a rocket. The UN Security Council adopted a statement calling on North Korea to comply with a 2006 resolution banning missile tests. Pyongyang says its rocket carried a satellite, but several nations viewed it as cover for a missile test. The six-party talks - involving the US, China, Japan, Russia and the two Koreas - have stalled over the failure of Pyongyang to verify the shutdown of the Yongbyon nuclear plant. North Korea agreed to dismantle the facility as part of an aid-for-disarmament deal and, in response, the US removed North Korea from its terrorism blacklist. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8066615.stm Also: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2009hbaf.php#maps
  24. I'd rather...

I'd rather play SimCity 4 vanilla than carry a Sony FW900 monitor up several flights of stairs.
  25. What are some indie music artists that you're really into right now? I've been following these two for quite a while now. Quality stuff. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=20215 http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=307469
