Tram goes undercover with NAM...thoughts from an old fart.
ratata posted a topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Hello guysn'gals! This thread will in no possible way improve your life with SC4. It's not an important issue I'm bringing up for discussion. Threads like this will come alive when people are foolish enough to provide and offer old farts like me with more time they have use for. You've been warned. - The other day I had to make a tram line go underground for a short distance. I used one of those two NAM gadgets available to solve the problem. The FLUP (flexible under passes) would have been the best solution because the underground parts used are designed solely with the tram in mind. Unfortunately, in this very scenario I couldn't use that solution since SC4 identifies the road, aveneu and all other selectable pieces with underground tram as 'reserved' tiles since they are dual network pieces. That's why I had to go with the other approach, SFBT, "Subway to Tram "Transition" where you join the transitions together with a subway tunnel. At a glance, it seem to work as intended. Trams went underground, travels the underground distance, emerges again into the daylight continiuing its predestinated journey. But then I got curious and started to think what was really going on under the hood using this approach? First the simple scenario, the seamless scenario: - The transition leads the tram to the underground. Down there, the tram finds a subway. The subway rails seems suitable for a tram and the tram continues the journey in the subway until it hits the second transition. The tram seamlessy leaves the subway tunnel for the transition and suddenly hits daylight again. A seamless tram passage underground with no obstacles what so ever. The second scenario, the implex scenario: - The transition leads the tram to the underground. Down there, the tram finds a subway tunnel with rail dimensions different from what trams are using. Since the tram can go no farther, all passengers are transferred to a subway train. The empty tram returns the same way it came from. The subway train-set, now carrying the former tram passenger, continous the journey until it hits the second transition. At the transition all passengers must now leave the subway train-set to embark a second tram waiting for them. When this is done, the tram starts and eventually hits daylight again, back on a proper tram network. (And last time I heard from that subway train in that short, short subway tunnel, he was still bouncing back and forth between those end stations. A 19 second journey. Day in, day out...not even knowing there's a sun up there...) What scenario is plausible? I'm sure there are several more possible scenarios. But still, what goes on under the hood? How to change default mappings for some items?
ratata posted a topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Hello Guysn'gals! - Is it possible to change the location where SimCity4 normally would read/write? The default for this is in your 'Documents' folder and I thought it would be fun to do a stunt with a fresh Windows installation but tell the installation to put the 'User' folder on drive D. That actually solved my problems with SimCity4 but arose a few more obscure I didn't think of. So I decided to keep 'Users' on C like everybody else. Hence the question, where can I change where SC4 saves and look for plugins and extras? ratata -
How to change default mappings for some items?
ratata replied to ratata's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
- Thanks! I actually tried that method first too, but didn't get it to work with plugins. So I skipped that one only to try it again now when you too suggested it. And look, now it works! Me happy! -
- I'm very new to NAM but I use it a lot. It's great, I like it. However, I find the NAM is so big and complex that I sometimes have problems finding what I'm looking for. One example is when cycling through different pieces with the tab key. It's hard to remember the text descriptions of the pieces since I suspect it's almost impossible to have an useful naming convention of all different pieces. That makes it hard to know when you've cycled through all pieces, especially if they are many and similar to each other. One simple idea to make it easier is to number the pieces. Something like this: 1(29) Avenue Starting/Ending Section Orthogonal/Diagonal 2(29) Avenue Blank Terrain - Orthogonal/Diagonal 3(29) Avenue Blank Terrain - Orthogonal-to-Diagonal Transition ... ... 27(29) Avenue over Diagonal Ground Light Rail 28(29) 'T’ Avenue OnSlope 29(29) Straight Avenue OnSlope Also, it's so much easier for the mind to connect a number and text description to a specific piece than it is if it's only a plain text description.

I understand that the NAM has been under development by you enthusiasts for quite a while now. How many are you involved with the project? I was thinking to add a few hours to the original 24 hours in a day so I have at least 27 - 28 hours per day. If I succeed, do you have use for another programmer? Are there pages with documentation over what interfaces, frameworks and tools you use? Or perhaps the project will get too complex and messy with too many programmers?

Newbie-questions about NAM, rails and traffic simulation
ratata posted a topic in NAM & Transit Networks
Hello guysn'gals! - This NAM32 is so neat and makes SimCity4 so much better compared to when I was playing SimCity4 last time, more than eight years ago. However, I have two questions that remains unanswered even after reading the manual and searching the forum. 1. Underground rail Underground rail is new to me and looks great but I can't really get it to work. I find one billion different puzzel pieces with all kinds of networking above the underground rail. Road above underground rail, street above underground rail etc etc. But no 'Nothing above underground rail'? What am I missing here? Perhaps it's not possible creating rail tunnels for cargo or passengers? Is that the case? So, the question is if it's possible to create underground train traffic (cargo/passenger) very much like the subway way? With nothing above it? 2. The traffic simulator The Traffic Simulator Configuration Tool that optionally can be installed within the NAM32 installation, does it work like 'out of the box'? The manual says that first time running the tool, all you have to do is to press save and you're up and running next time you start the tool and save what ever settings you like to alter. Is that correct? Or do I have to make more preparations to make changes made in the Traffic Simulator Configuration Tool to have an impact on the current region played? While at it, does these changes have an impact on all regions, meaning what ever changes you make they will have an impact on the entire 'world map'? off topic mumbo jumbo Pardon for my 'swenglish'. When swedes write in English, they tend to write Swedish but with English words. Writing like that sometimes can produce quite funny translations. I remember when I was a kid back in the 70's. This was in the childhood of the digital revolution and my father came home with a new gadget almost every day. Calculators, watches and stuff like that. One day he was excited more than ususal when he came home. He had an electronic translation machine. It could translate ANY Swedish phrase into proper, clean and correct English. In other words, this was Gods gift to humanity. Go ahead son, test it, he said. I wrote the most simple phrase I could think of, In Swedish. The phrase was (in English), 'What time is it?' This machine, Gods gift to humanity, actually translated this phrase really good. The problem is that it translated the phrase word by word. The outcome was '-How very much is bell?'. It's a perfect translation. Really. But it's translated word by word. So, my guess is that the translated phrase is not very meaningful to an english speaking person, is it? Or maybe I'm wrong? Would you, who have english as your native tongue, be even close to guess what 'How very much is bell?' really means? Even remotely close to '-What time is it?'? end mumbo jumbo Best regards ratata -
Newbie-questions about NAM, rails and traffic simulation

- Thank you. Now I know! -
Hello folks! - It has been almost eight years since I last played SC4. The new SC was a huge disappointment to me both when it first came and also after the 'off-line'-patch got released. The other day I installed SC4 again just for fun, but this time on a new, modern HD laptop with all extra candy. What a thrill! It was so cool. HD resolution, fast GPU, SSD, tons of GP memory and a billion ton of working memory. And the W8.1 which is so much faster than W7. Now SC4 really looks...really new and fresh. So, I'm hooked again. I also discovered that this site, www.simtropololis.com, has grown beyond every expectation since my last visit. There's so much to discover and download that it will take weeks, or even months, to look everything through. Hence my question: - Is there some kind of backup tool for SC4 that will restore all maps, add-ons, cities and everything else when making a clean Windows install or migrating to another PC? For instance, I'm using 'Media-Portal' as our media center here at home. It works great but takes more than a week to get it all right if installing from scratch. It's a tedious work. That's why it's so nice to have a backup tool to make a backup of all settings and databases. Is there a similar tool available for SC4? ratata
