Actually I know the issue he's talking about. There's a major slowdown related to avenues and left-turn lanes... I've seen this huge slowdown myself. It's because all the avenues are joined together, and the game tries to update all of them at once when it updates the median. I've fixed this problem by breaking up avenues with one-way roads (just bulldozing one tile and replacing it with one way roads), and this fixes the problem for me. Obviously, that would be far too time-consuming for him to do. I think the problem he's seeing is related to the left-turn lanes and not anything else in the NAM, though. As for the roads all being green; if any real city in the world built a grid road network like that, they would have huge capacity for cars as well, but speeds would be so low because theres an intersection in every 5 seconds driving at normal speed, lol. Maybe it could be solved by breaking up the city into zones, and in each zone the lights are green for north-south, then switches to green for east-west. Each zone would be at the opposite phase of the adjacent zone (a checkerboard pattern). The zones could be spaced 1 minute apart with signals set to 1 minute so that cars driving at a certain speed always have a green light, in either direction. There would be a problem transitioning from one zone to the next, because that zone is red while yours is greeen, but it only turns green once yours is red. Maybe at the border of zones the green could last 10 seconds longer while the rest of the zone has 10 seconds of all-red, for pedestrians.

I can't seem to get one way road rounabouts working. How do I have to lay out the road pieces?

I agree. I think SC4 has micromanagement in all the wrong places - I really don't care about having to check and set funding for power, school, and health all the time. I'd much rather micromanage traffic.. traffic and zoning/landscaping are really my favorite aspects of SC4.

Thanks for the comments everyone! This pales in comparison with some of the truly kick-ass CJ's I've seen on these forums, but it's ok In an effort to more closely integrate the western and eastern halves of downtown, a major project to demolish the elevated expressway/bridge and replace it with a sunken ground freeway/tunnel. Although the area had a lot of greenery and trees, people felt that the freeway was a barrier to pedestrians and cyclists and was a noise nuisance to nearby residents. How the area originally looked: Demolition of the freeway and buildings in the way: Construction of tunnel: Completion of new interchange: After pic: Construction of a new bridge to the east:

How about right turn yield-turns? These are common where I live (Montreal). To get an idea of what this is, look at the screen captures below. Notice that for the left intersection, I can use streets to get this effect, but for the right intersection, I cannot use streets because of the alignment of the intersection. Also, this cannot be done for orthogonal intersections. In the second shot, I've photoshopped the image to show what a new intersection could look like. For the second topic, look at the following shots. In real-life, a left turn (and right turn without the streets) would be difficult to do (maybe impossible for an 18-wheeler) at such an intersection. I've photoshopped the second image to show what a more realistic intersection might look like ( a bad photoshop, i know ) Lastly, how about more realistic lane widths? The Avenue's pavement is wide enough to hold 3 lanes (or 2 lanes plus a parking lane), even with that beautiful wide median.

How do the europeans tell the difference between normal roads and one way roads.. or what about two-way roads that have different number of lanes on each side?

A rich billionaire has bought a 144km^2 plot of land with the ambition of building a new, modern city without the planning mistakes of the past. One of the main goals of this new city is to provide a modern, safe place to live while accomodating for modern styles and preferences. One major problem with cities today is traffic.. suburbs concentrate all their traffic on to arteries spaced far apart, so it's easy for traffic to get congested, plus it's hard to get around because places are disconnected from one another. Also, many cities have blighted their inner areas with industry or elevated transit/freeways. Why put up with it? So what's this billionaire's plan? Make a new city with a downtown and several edge cities and linking them with sunken freeways, parkways, and monorail, dispersing the traffic and eliminating congestion! Mass transit will consist of high-speed monorail and bus only, no old-fashioned trains or subways, and the high capacity won't be needed because of the dispersed pattern. Speed is more important. All the industry is going to be located in 3 industry cities located away from residential areas (except for high-tech where it doesn't matter much), one for each main type. Portsmouth Region: From this site NAM, Trail Parks, Water mod, all from the site, too Anyway, I know, there isn't much to see yet, but here it is! Region view: Portsmouth West: Suburban area West of downtown Parkway - Freeway connection Downtown Huge interchange on the parkway, similar to those that can be found on the west island, near Montreal where I live Harbor city: The industrial area A funky interchange
