It takes me less time to get into New York City from my town than it would to get to the nearest city of any size in NJ (Newark, not counting the continuous bedroom communites of ~ 30,000 to ~50,000 inhabitants or the big mall that is Paramus). The lifeblood of Northern New Jersey (and much of Eastern Central Jersey) IS NYC.
