  1. Planning: Zoning Help

Is the NAM safe? Are there any issues? And is the programmer affiliated with the original team in any way?
  2. Planning: Zoning Help

MidWestSimGeek: You lost me at Hello. Seriously, I appreciate the input. My problems are linked to the direct limitations of the game. The streets don't act like roads. They can only make 90 degree turns -- nothing in between. This limits neighborhood construction to "grids". And, no, I have no mods installed. I would still like to see images of your cities.
  3. Support: Prima Games eGuides

I thought about that -- sort of. But, I figured the overhead costs to view the eguide using an emulator wasn't worth it. I'm running the server on a P3 730MHz machine with 512 MB of RAM.
  4. SCREWSTON, TX

Looks like your doing a good job with the 610-Loop and Sam Houston Tollway (Beltway . Don't forget about the pierce elevated near downtown. Where are you going to place the University reward (U of H or Rice)??
  5. Learn on easy. This is the only way to figure out what works and doesn't work. I say this because you get more money initially and less restrictions. This makes learning the boundaries of R,C, and I zones less stressful. Don't go for a beautiful city right away. Instead, try to learn the quirks of the game.
  6. mass transit in industrial zones

In other words, you could have three parallel roads of equal distance side by side and only one will be used. You would think a third of the travelers would appear on each road. But, NO NO NO. Sim life isn't like that. Sims wish to Smeagle you -- anger you with their stupidity. Therefore, be a cowboy and herd your sims in the direction you want them to go. If everything is tied together (ie: Grid which leads to Grid-Lock)., make some strategic breaks to force the sims to take one of your many other connections. For some stupid reason, two bus stops placed next to each ( ala side-by-side) will not divide the bus traffic at that location. The Sims simply reach the first stop and get off there. I believe this is due to their willingness to hoof it 8 or more squares.

That's more like it N_O_Body. You seem to vary lot sizes. Some lots are 1Rx1C. Some are 3Rx1C.

  9. If you ever purchase a Prima Games eGuide and have problems, don't bother using their forum for help. You will only recieve a standard reply from the forum moderator. Below is a question I posed and the response. What are the system requirements for using a Prima Games eGuide? I have not been able to find this information anywhere. The only information provided by the "help" pages states a windows system is required. It does not state which operating systems specifically. (ie: What operating systems?) P.S. Please don't downplay your customer's intelligence. Anyone can navigate an eGuide folder structure and find the underlying PDF. Your so called executable is most-likely a watered down version of Adobe Reader. quote> Reply from forum moderator, Bylle. For any eGuide related issues and concerns, please contact us at eguidesupport@primagames.com. Our eGuides are protected and not intended to be shared and distributed. quote> I attempted to load the SimCity 4 Rush Hour eGuide on a machine running Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP2 with no success. Their support pages state all you need is a windows based system. Come to find out that isn't exactly true. Their eguides will not work on the server versions of Windows. Hence, the system requirements question. IDIOTS.
  10. Runway dimensions vary from as small as 800 feet (240 m) long and 25 feet (8 m) wide in smaller general aviation airports, to 18,000 feet (5,500 m) long and 250 feet (80 m) wide at large international airports built to accommodate large passenger jets. In terms of usability for air carrier operations, a runway of at least 6,000 ft (1,820 m) in length is usually adequate for aircraft weights below approximately 200,000 lb (90,900 kg). Larger aircraft including widebodies (Boeing 747, 767, 777, and 787 ); Airbus A-340, A-330, A-350 (still in design), A-380 and A-310; McDonnell-Douglas DC-10 or MD-11; and the Lockheed L1011 will usually require at least 8,000 ft (2,430 m) at sea level and somewhat more at higher altitude airports. Also please remember, the numbers are directional headings (9=90 degrees (east) 27=270 (west) etc.) and runways can be used in both directions. Also, PLEASE TAKE NOTE of regulations regarding runway markings: http://www.usatoday.com/travel/columnist/getline/2006-02-27-ask-the-captain_x.htm quote> I got an f'ng headache reading that.
  11. mass transit in industrial zones

I know you are well into your city development with 4.2 Million screaming idiots. But, couldn't you divert traffic somehow without causing a mass exodus? Break a route forcing other sims to find your detour.
  12. Planning: Zoning Help

Thank you for your responses to date. mistershnerples: Thanks for providing an image in zone data view. However, your approach to city planning is still based on a grid. I'm looking for planners that have gotten away from "GRID" cities. Here's an example: http://www.485group.com/sc4/index.php The planner of Carthage created an excellent website. He lacks zone data views demonstrating placement of R, C, and I. Some improvements I would like to see in future installments: 1. Ability to build diagonally (plopables and all). 2. Ability for construction to occur one tile away from any street, road, or avenue. In other words, I want a store to pop up behind my bust stops or subway terminals. 3. Accessible region view from within the current city tile to aid in transportation design. 4. More to come as I get annoyed.
  13. The STEX is a cool site. There is a ton of information. The problem is locating worthwhile articles. I desperately need help in planning. Every city I create follows a grid pattern. My industrial zone lies on the edges of the tile. I would love to see images of cities developed using the original SimCity 4 Deluxe package. They need to demonstrate layouts for residential, commercial, and industrial. Images with the zoning data view would be extremely helpful. This would allow me to see how many grid squares are in use. A problem that continuously appears is how big to make a "city" block. For example, should I zone for two 3x3 bldgs, four, or more (see below). No one ever seems to address this in discussions. ==================== ==XXX | XXX | XXX | XXX == ==XXX | XXX | XXX | XXX == ==XXX | XXX | XXX | XXX == ==---------------------------- == ==XXX | XXX | XXX | XXX == ==XXX | XXX | XXX | XXX == ==XXX | XXX | XXX | XXX == ===================== The X's are the actual grid squares. The hyphen indicates the rear of the bldg. The equal sign a road.
