Marx only saw violent revoltion as the answer because thats all the masses could do back in the 19th century. Power was held by the Rich, the poor had no chance to rise to high Governmental positions. Only 5 British PM's haven't attended Oxford or Cambridge, and only 2 of those 5 came from relatively normal backgrounds. Its good to remember that Marxist Theory is just that; a Theory. Marx didn't live long enough to see his work in action, if he had done, no doubt he would have made some serious alterations. Thats why I'm all for revision of his texts. What would qualify? Maybe it's not socialism until they actually admit it? Have we reached a point where the people can't see it for themselves?quote> If it was done under different circumstances, say, when the economy was stable, it could have been described as a Socialist move. However in this crisis, world Governments seem to agree Nationalisation and economic intervention is a 'necessary evil' in order to save the Banks from themselves. When the Economy is stable again, making the Banks Private again seems likely. Communism and fascism are both socialist systems, the argument is over which flavor of socialism we're actually building here. That we're on a socialist drift is no longer in question. quote> Its more of a "Lean" than a "Drift". The US is not on an unstoppable road to Marxism like some American seem to think, at the most extreme you may get Socialised Healthcare, but I very much doubt it.

  6. CitiesXL Beta Sign Up

If this Beta Registration keeps going any longer, I'm probably going to Sign up again since I'm getting a new Computer soonish. I wonder if this is going to be a random Lottery type of selection, or are MC going to hand-pick a select few? Hand picking makes more sense I guess; no point giving the Beta to somebody with a computer that lacks the requirements. Talking about requirements... have they even been determined yet?
  7. Screenshots (Pre-Release)

That video was fantastic. Only issue I saw was that the Buildings construction animations lack some sort of Scaffolding, whcih makes construction look more like a building raising out of the ground like some brick and mortar zombie. Surely they'll fix that.
  8. Screenshots (Pre-Release)

"Disponible le 01 Septembre, 2009" Is that an official release date or just speculation? I was kind of hoping it would come out sooner but I guess the longer they have to work on it the better it should be.
  9. Court jails Pirate Bay founders Pirate Bay's Peter Sunde, speaking on his website: 'We cannot and wouldn't pay' A court in Sweden has jailed four men behind The Pirate Bay (TPB), the world's most high-profile file-sharing website, in a landmark case. Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Carl Lundstrom and Peter Sunde were found guilty of breaking copyright law and were sentenced to a year in jail. They were also ordered to pay $4.5m (£3m) in damages. Record companies welcomed the verdict but the men are to appeal and Sunde said they would refuse to pay the fine. Speaking at an online press conference, he described the verdict as "bizarre". "It's serious to actually be found guilty and get jail time. It's really serious. And that's a bit weird," Sunde said. "It's so bizarre that we were convicted at all and it's even more bizarre that we were [convicted] as a team. The court said we were organised. I can't get Gottfrid out of bed in the morning. If you're going to convict us, convict us of disorganised crime. "We can't pay and we wouldn't pay. Even if I had the money I would rather burn everything I owned, and I wouldn't even give them the ashes." It is almost certain that The Pirate Bay will keep on sailing, long after today's court judgement Read more at the dot.life blog Q&A: Pirate Bay verdict Send us your comments The damages were awarded to a number of entertainment companies, including Warner Bros, Sony Music Entertainment, EMI, and Columbia Pictures. However, the total awarded fell short of the $17.5m in damages and interest the firms were seeking. Speaking to the BBC, the chairman of industry body the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) John Kennedy said the verdict sent out a clear message. "These guys weren't making a principled stand, they were out to line their own pockets. There was nothing meritorious about their behaviour, it was reprehensible. "The Pirate Bay did immense harm and the damages awarded doesn't even get close to compensation, but we never claimed it did. "There has been a perception that piracy is OK and that the music industry should just have to accept it. This verdict will change that," he said. The Pirate Bay's first server is now a museum exhibit in Stockholm The four men denied the charges throughout the trial, saying that because they did not actually host any files, they were not doing anything wrong. Speaking on Swedish Radio, assistant judge Klarius explained how the court reached its findings. "The court first tried whether there was any question of breach of copyright by the file-sharing application and that has been proved, that the offence was committed. "The court then moved on to look at those who acted as a team to operate the Pirate Bay file-sharing service, and the court found that they knew that material which was protected by copyright but continued to operate the service," he said. A lawyer for Carl Lundstrom, Per Samuelson, told journalists he was shocked by the guilty verdict and the severity of the sentence. "That's outrageous, in my point of view. Of course we will appeal," he was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency. "This is the first word, not the last. The last word will be ours." Political issue Rickard Falkvinge, leader of The Pirate Party - which is trying to reform laws around copyright and patents in the digital age - told the BBC that the verdict was "a gross injustice". "This wasn't a criminal trial, it was a political trial. It is just gross beyond description that you can jail four people for providing infrastructure. Mark Mulligan from Forrester Research says what was different about Pirate Bay "There is a lot of anger in Sweden right now. File-sharing is an institution here and while I can't encourage people to break copyright law, I'm not following it and I don't agree with it. "Today's events make file-sharing a hot political issue and we're going to take this to the European Parliament." The Pirate Bay is the world's most high profile file-sharing website and was set up in 2003 by anti-copyright organisation Piratbyran, but for the last five years it has been run by individuals. Millions of files are exchanged using the service every day. No copyright content is hosted on The Pirate Bay's web servers; instead the site hosts "torrent" links to TV, film and music files held on its users' computers. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8003799.stm Not that this has affected the Pirate Bay site, the whole exercise just seems to be about Record Companies get their share of whatever profit these guys were making.

  11. America Revolts

I like this months cover of the Economist... have they put the Docklands into the background? Hah. Although, I think Liberty (the woman in the painting) should cover up if this is present day London or she'll get arrested for indecent exposure.
  12. Us Scots all have wonderful singing voices. We needed to be a few centuries ago since Bagpipes were outlawed (they were classified as weapons). As for how long she'll last, well, I have doubts. Reality TV stars rarely famous for long unless they milk it (or are incredible stupid)... in a years time she'll probably be reduced to singing the National Anthem at Murray Field during Rugby Games, nothing more. (Somehow I fear i'll be swallowing those words, but its only a prediction based on past experience)

I'm not sure if I had it though, only Mircro Machines toy I had was Night Attack - Fun times... although, I think I chewed one of the Soldiers heads off I also had alot of Lego, LOTS of Lego. I never made the stuff it was intended for, me and my brother used to make Tanks out of them and smash them together like conkers until one of them broke (whoevers broke first lost the game). Also had a few Hornby Train sets, but I broke every last one of them.

You can also get them online at Amazon.com. I own all Eight Series, and am really hoping for a Series 9 to explain BTE. I will also be buying BTE when it is available in the US. TEGquote> Their making a season 10 instead since BTE pretty much explains series 9... Holly gets flooded when Lister leaves the bath running, Kotchanski leaves on Blue Midget and Kryten lies to Lister, telling he she's dead after being flushed out of an Airlock and Lister gets drunk alot, and generally acts depressing. Season 9 wouldn't be much.

I probably won't make use of the Ski GEM but it sounds really good, reminds of the 'Theme' games that used to be around, Theme Park, Theme Hospital etc. I love the terrain though, it looks like World in Conflict terrain. The village also reminds me of Cascade Falls from WiC, although, I bet you can't Nuke it...
  18. Custom content is going to be essential to how long this game survives, if it wants to achieve anything near to the longevity of Sim City 4, we need non-restrictive modding abilities and all the tools required to pull them off. I'm sure there is a way to have the ability to add Custom content and provide a stable on-line environment, even if it means simply disabling online mode when Custom Files are enabled. I'm sure everybody would like to build Custom on-line cities, but the project would run into too many problems that I won't get into.
  19. Online Play: Pay to Play?

It'll probably have to be paid for, Dirk mentioned it - Originally posted by: dirk Yes, I had asked what the cost would be of course I can not say in any official capacity, so take it with a grain of salt until we get some official words, but they were mentioning about around USD12 bucks quote> I'm not too bothered, as long as all the majority of good content isn't purely online.
  20. New Red Dwarfs

Youtube is a good place to start Red Dwarf BTE Part 1 Follow it on from there. I think all the Episodes are up. Both Season 1 and 2 are good, but the lack of Kryten makes it slightly hollow.

  22. New Red Dwarfs

I'm surprised this has only surfaced here today, I've known about the new Episodes since February, and watched all of them over the weekend They weren't the best Dwarf episodes ever, but after a Decade, what do you expect? The acting got better as each Episode progressed however, so I would get on my knees and beg Doug Naylor to make a new series... given he brings back the laugter track, the last 3 Eps seemed a bit empty without it. Also, even though there has been 8 Series', there won't be a 9th since the majority of what would be contained in the 9th series is explained in BTE. Doug instead is jumping to a 10th series, given that BTE is gets goods feedback and they SELL ENOUGH DVD'S *cough*BUY10EACH*cough*. I also recommend Series 5 You'll get to meet Easy Bakes avatar... the fabled 'Mr Flibbles'! Originally posted by: Merlin of Flyote Originally posted by: Jezus53 What? 23. Opening Cuba To The US

Yeah, I thought if anybody was going to do this, it was going to be Obama, there was no point holding a grudge for this long, its been a pretty juvenile affair. Its about the right time anyway... Castro is on his last legs and is no longer in power, Raul has fired alot of Castro's buddies for Government and he's given the Cuban people some of their rights back. I guess for a historical Presidency he's going to have to make some historical decisions, this is one of em.

Riots though, I would love to see Riots. It could start out as a peaceful demonstration that gathers in strength until it starts to disrupt day to day business. The effectivness of the Riot-Teams should depend on the Funding of your Police force (Too much funding and your Police become over-zealous making the crowd violent but easy to contain. Too little funding will see your Police force being overwhelmed by Rioters, the crowd won't be quite so angry, but will be hard to contain) and your Education levels (Highly educated populace is more likely to demonstrate, but less likely to resort of violence. A Poorly Educated populace is less likely to demonstrate but more likely to resort to violence), the outcome is going to be purely up to how you've run your city. I'd also like to see the Mayor pick up the repair Bill after disasters. In SC4 they gave you the amount of damage caused but you never had to pay it out. I think if this was to be realistic, after a disaster you should be able to pay the bill and the repairations should get under way, restoring the wrecked part of town to its former glory. If you choose NOT to pay the bill, the wrecked part of town will stay wrecked untill you start to manually demolish and rebuild, but this will cause the citizens in the area to move out of the city.
  25. Screenshots (Pre-Release)

I quite like the first Screenshot, dispite the 'Santa's Workshop' vibe it gives off. I hope that all types of buildings can get covered in snow on these winter maps, not just the wooden Alpine looking ones.
