Military base analysis & troubleshooting in SimCity 2000

    Contributor/author(s): Wren Weburg, Ben Huang

    What kind of base?

The type of military base you get depends on your city's terrain. Here's the breakdown:

    • Very hilly terrain: missile silo or army base
    • If city has an ocean (i.e., you only have three neighboring cities): naval base
    • If city is relatively flat: air force base

Note that the type of base you get can vary greatly. In other words, it's not too predictable. The terrain conditions above are only a general rule; sometimes the simulator has a mind of its own. If you want a specific type of base in your city, make sure to save your city before the population hits 60,000. This way, if you don't get the base you want, you can reload the city and try again. You can even change the terrain after reloading the city to see if that will affect the type of base you get.

    The military base won't grow!

Unfortunately, there's an apparent bug in the simulator that affects some cities some of the time. But here's a suggestion from Ben Huang that may help stalled military base, if you have SCURK (SimCity Urban Renewal Kit):

Open SCURK and load your city. From the "Windows" menu, choose "Place & Print". On the "Object Group", choose "Transportation & Military". Scroll down the picture box until you see the military control tower, aircraft, parking lot. Choose those and place them beside your military runway. Place as much as you want within the military zone given to you by the government. Since this is SCURK, you can place electrical wires on military zones (you can't do it in SC2K). Be sure the wire is running from an electrical source, such as a power source or powered facility. Run the wire to your recently placed towers, aircraft, and lots. Save your city and go to SC2K. Load the city you've just worked on. Click on "Speed" and choose "African Swallow". The base will be altered somewhat and you'll probably have to return to SCURK after you saved it to fix it. But overall, your base should be developed.
