This may be more of a "cheat" than a trick, but at any rate, here's how to prevent the "real" disaster from occuring in disaster-realted scenarios (this trick has not been 100% verified to work):
When you start a scenario, move your cursor over the speed menu and press enter/return key immediately following clicking your main mouse button. Then go to the disaster menu and select fire. After you put out the fire, the original disaster won't even occur.
