You can change any SimCity 2000 city or scenario into a SimCity 3000 city, starter town, or real-world terrain map. Just change to the extension of the SimCity 2000 file to the desired file type by using the chart below. After the file extension has been changed, the file can be loaded into SimCity 3000 as usual.

| SimCity 2000 city | .sc2 |
| SimCity 3000 city | .sc3 |
| SimCity 3000 real-world terrain city | .sct |
| SimCity 3000 starter town city | .st3 |
Note: SimCity 3000 files can't be opened with SimCity 2000, even if you rename them with SimCity 2000 file extensions.
