Stoddard

Stoddard is a village in Vernon County.
Trivia:
Stoddard was founded as a farming community. It is notable as one of the few communities along the Mississippi River that was never a trading post or a riverboat stop. The river was originally one mile west of Stoddard, but when Lock and Dam No. 8 was built in 1937, the ensuing lake flooded the lowlands, literally bringing the river to the town.
Viroqua
Population: 4362
Viroqua is the county seat of Vernon County.
Trivia:
Viroqua was dubbed "The Town That Beat Walmart" by Smithsonian Magazine in 1992 because it fostered businesses that co-exist with the retail giant.
Wauzeka
Population: 728
Wauzeka is a village in Crawford County.
West Salem
Population: 5005
West Salem is a village in La Crosse County.
Trivia:
West Salem was platted in 1856. It was named Salem by a Baptist minister named Elder Card because the word meant "peace" in Arabic and Hebrew. The word West was added to the name when mail was confused with another town in the state named Salem.
Westby
Population: 2200
Westby is a city in Vernon County.
Trivia:
Westby's most popular event is the Syttende Mai festival, an annual three-day event held in mid-May. The festival stems from Westby's Norwegian roots, Syttende Mai being a Norwegian holiday ("Syttende Mai" translates to "Seventeenth of May") celebrating Norway's independence and the signing of the Norwegian Constitution.
