Wausau is a city in and the county seat of Marathon County.


Trivia:

Nearly one-third of the Marathon County economy is based in manufacturing, with the balance in the service industry. Prominent industries include paper manufacturing, insurance, home manu-facturing, and tourism. The Wausau region has a lower than average unemployment rate and continues a steady growth in job creation and economic viability among manufacturers and service providers alike. Wausau has 12 banks with 41 branch locations, three trust companies and three holding companies in the metropolitan area. There are also 13 open membership credit unions with 18 branch locations.

The Wausau area is a center for cultivation of American ginseng, and is also known for its red granite, which is quarried nearby.

Wausau Insurance was once one of the largest insurance providers in the US, since gobbled up by Liberty Mutual in 1999.

Wautoma        
Population: 2218     

Wautoma is a city in Waushara County.

Trivia:

Wautoma calls itself the "Christmas tree capital of the world". The Kirk Company of Tacoma, Washington, operated the "Wautoma plantation" of more than 10,000 acres of Christmas trees, beginning in 1953.

Weston is a village in Marathon County.

Trivia:

Until 1905, the town of Weston included the territory now known as the town of Rib Mountain, which was split off under the name of Erickson. The southern two-thirds of the town of Weston was split away in 1996 to form the village of Weston.

Weyauwega is a city in Waupaca County.

Wild Rose            
Population: 725

Wild Rose is a village in Waushara County.

Trivia:

A post office called Wild Rose has been in operation since 1873. The village was named from wild rose bushes near the original town site, although many early settlers arrived from Rose, New York in the mid 1850's and the town may be named Wild Rose in reference to Rose, NY.
