I'm new to posting, and hope this is where my question belongs. When I download from STEX and extract to the plug in folder, everything works fine BUT...when I try to open the "read me", Windows Media Player pops up and tells me it can't read the file. I'm clueless as to why media player is opening at all. Enlighten me, please!

If notepad has not been found, look for it in the C:/WiNDOWS/system32/notepad

The above advice only applies if the readme file has an extension of txt.  If the extension is htm or html you should use your browser.

Thank you for the assist. If the read me actually makes it to the plug in folder and I can extract it, I can read it using notepad following your advice. Some WON'T extract at all, or if I try to extract them, then I get the goofy Media Player situation. (I'm using win-zip, btw). What is really causing me grief are the mods that have several options where the author says to read the read me first to know which option to use. I can't get the read me to open, therefore I can't know which option to select. This is really frustrating cuz it's the only problem I've encountered at all with using mods, bats, etc.

I never unzip one of these directly into the Plugins folder.  You should handle all downloads in a systematic manner.

I have a folder on my desktop called My Downloads.  Inside this, I have a folder for each place I download from.  Inside this, I have individual folders as needed.

I download stuff from here into My Downloads\Simtropolis.  I then use the right click option to unpack the zip into a folder of the same name, then move the zip in there for good measure.  I can then play with this at my leasure, and do what is necessary.

You should look at your options in the Player.  You should only allow it to play MP3, WMA and similar music files, and maybe swf, and mpg movies.  The system should have to ask for odd-ball extensions so you can decide.  Maybe you should reiinstall MP10 and fix the options once and for all.

Thanx, N_O_Body. I'm gonna do that from now on. What's strange and baffling is that I never really use MP and don't have it associated with ANY file types. (Everything goes to Winamp, which DOESN'T open at all whith Sim City stuff, which is exactly what it's supposed to do.)For whatever reason, it opens, then tells me it's not associated with the file extension I'm trying to open. Your advice is well taken, given that with any download source, there's an inherent risk, plus, it makes it easier to sort out if one plug in causes some strange action to occur, it makes it easier to isolate. Thanx again!
