Welcome to the City of Edwards

in the heart of The Patoka Bay Region

Thanks for your interest in my first city journal!  Like most of you, I'm sure, I have thought about posting a few cities before, but I would usually destroy them instead because I wasn't happy with the way they were turning out.  I think I'm on to something this time.  I started with skippydam73's Seattle region and made a few modifications.  I knew where I wanted to put my first major industrial, commercial and residential areas, but from there, I just let it flow.

I have to say thanks to Pegasus for the Leveler and Industrial Kit.  Thanks also to jeronij for the CMD Walls and Shore Conforming Walls.  I used these lots fairly liberally to get the effects that I wanted.  I've used several other lots and mods from this sight so if you see one of yours, thank you and I hope you like what I've done with it.

I am open to any suggestions or comments so let 'er rip.  Here we go!

As you can see, Edwards strong economy is a result of it's efficient industrial seaport area.  As Edwards' industry goes high tech, it will become a little more integrated with commercial and residential areas, but for now, it stands alone.  Most of the residental area is to the right and bottom on Mt. Adams.  I used trees and walls to emphasize the elevation change.
<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//MtAdams.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

Edwards not only relies on it's seaports.  It has an extensive rail system for a city of it's small size.
<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Freightstation.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Roundhouse.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

I really like this neighborhood because it shows that industry and high-wealth residential can coexist.  With a few well placed trees and walls, I got a nice range of buidings in a small area.
<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Navyport.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

I had to find a way to get my rail to the military seaport so I sunk it and put some retaining walls around it.  Add a tunnel for a quiet exit and problem solved.
<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Railtunnel.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

This is just the beginning.  Edwards is the starting point of a huge region of which you will see in the near future.  My focus is on getting a good city center started and expanding out to the other areas of Patoka Bay.

I hope this gains a few fans.  Like I said, any comments and suggestions are welcomed.  I plan on keeping this going, so I can use any help.  Enjoy!

Your city looks great. i like how you did the rail w/ the walls. In order to get rid of the symbols go to my sim mode and click the car. then youll see a button with two symbols on it... i think its the third one, click it and voila.. no more pesky symbols.

Hi creilmann,

Just a word to say you are making a great use of those CDM and Seawalls.

May be some terraforming before lying the roads/avennues would improve the general aspect. The railway is very well done !!!!

Keep the good job44.gif

    Thanks Jeronij.

    Those walls have really come in handy.

    I've been doing some more terraforming as of late and I think you'll see that in my next update this week.  I'm working on a nice university area with a small commercial district for the students and an upscale neighborhood on one of the bay inlets.  I didn't do too much to the areas above because I already liked the layout and wanted to work with what was given to me.  It reminded me of an area I used to live in.

    Like I said, I'll have an update this week.  Maybe Friday.

    Thank you everyone for all of the posts!

    By the way,  I just noticed that the first picture isn't mine.  I don't know where it came from.  I used to have an overview of my whole city there.  Has this happened to anyone else?

    I'll try and change it when I have time.

    EDIT -----  Fixed it.  Still don't know what happened.

    Weird, I think that happened in a journal I was looking at the other day. It had the same pic as another journal I'd looked at earlier.

                    Madison State University

    Today, we'll take a look at Madison State University.  The University was founded in 1879 and is named after Alexander Madison, who, along with Henry Edwards, first settled the area after a peace treaty was signed with the natives.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//UniOverall1.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//UniOverall2.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

    MSU has one of the top Medical Schools in the nation along with a Disease Research Center that ranks #1 in cancer research.  MSU Medical School also ranks #1 in Neurosurgery and Pyhsical Therapy.

    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//MedicalSchool.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

    MSU offers degrees in everything from the Liberal and Fine Arts to Social and Technical Sciences.  Below is a picture of the fine arts buildings along with the Felix R. Gomez Theatre and Museum.  This building has won numerous architectural awards.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Gomez.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//LiberalArts.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

    The Slayter Ampitheatre is a great outdoor venue attracting orchestras, theatrical groups and other acts from all over the world.  It's also a favorite spot to watch the New Year's Eve fireworks display.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//WebsterCourt.JPG width=744 align=baseline border=4>

    Alexendar Madison Memorial Park is a favorite meeting spot for students who'll often just say, Meet me at Al's.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//MadisonPark.JPG width=802 align=baseline border=4>

    MSU competes in the IA division of college athletics.  MSU also has an extensive Intramural Sports program to get the rest of it's students involved in athletics.  Students can participate in anything from baseball to squash.  Panther Stadium is home to MSU's football (American) team.  The baseball team plays at Henry Edwards Field.  In it's 110 years of athletic competition, MSU has won 36 national championships in various sports.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//FootballField.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

    Mackey Fieldhouse is a state of the art athletic center that houses the basketball, hockey, volleyball, gymnastics, swimming and diving team,  and many other teams and clubs.  There are also weight rooms, raquetball courts, squash courts, an indoor track and a whole range of other athletic and recreational facilities for the students.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Mackey.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

          Benton Avenue Commercial District

    Benton Avenue is a large commercial district just off campus.  It can get quite lively at nights and on weekends.  The MSU Crew team calls the University Yacht Club it's home.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//BentonAve.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

    It's Friday night and the students usually kick off the weekend at the Fish Tale Brewery for happy hour!
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//FishTaleBrewery.JPG width=640 align=baseline border=4>

    It won't be long though untill they head over to the Hard Rock for live entertainment all night.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//HardRock.JPG width=640 align=baseline border=4>

                     University Heights

    University Heights is an upscale neighborhood across the inlet from Benton Avenue.  Most of the MSU faculty lives there.  The University Country Club is also located there.  It is the home course for the MSU Panther Golf Team.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//UniversityHeights.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

    Members of the country club are pampered with many luxuries.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//UniversityCC.JPG width=802 align=baseline border=4>

    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//CC2.JPG width=802 align=baseline border=4>

                          Other Attractions

    I thought we'd take a look at a couple of other attractions that you can visit when you come to Edwards.  Our long sandy beaches have always been a popular summertime destination.

    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//EdwardsBeach.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

    Fort Harrison National Cemetary is a great place to dive into some history and culture.  On May 2nd, 1842, there was a great battle between the natives and settlers.  5238 men died on the battlefield that day.  Seven years later, a peace treaty was signed that has allowed all of us to live peacefully to this very day.  This is where we go to remind us of what we learned from that terrible battle.  The building in the middle is Fort Harrison which was almost completely destroyed in the battle.  The Fort Harrison Preservation Society has been watching over it for 58 years now.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Fortedwards.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

    That's all for now.  I'll try and update next week.  Like I've said before, I'll take any feedback.

    Thanks for the comments!

    That would be the old Roundhouse Repair Building built in 1915.   It's a historical landmark and is still in use today.

    Old Town

    Welcome to the Old Town District of Edwards.  Some of the buildings in this district are hundreds of years old.  This is a beautiful and expensive place to live.  Plenty of culture, food and nightlife to keep you busy for weeks.  Let's take a look.

    Old Town sits right on the harbor and is a mixed residential and commercial area.  It is also a major area for tourism.  There are hundreds of boutiques, pubs and bistros lining the streets.  The main building below is The Regency Hotel.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Oldtown1.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

    Built in 1654, St. Lukes Cathedral is the oldest cathedral in the nation.  The Edwards Main Library has one of the most impressive collection of books and periodicals anywhere.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Church.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

    The Rembrant Theatre has much historical significance.  Many actors and actresses have gotten there start there and it is home to the Rembrant Theatre Company.  Donavan's Department Store has been an Edwards institution since 1892.

    &
    Capitol Gardens

    Edwards is also our nations capital.  The Capitol Center is filled with stunning buildings and monuments.

     Captiol Gardens is a beautiful place area for parades, concerts and national ceremonies.
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//CapitolGardens.JPG width=800 align=baseline border=4>

     Edwards was, and still is, a railroad town.  The beautiul Union Station celebrates our railroad history.

     The Port of Edwards

     Edwards is an international port.  Millions of tons of cargo pass through it every year.

    Hey now, we've got ourselves a city! I didn't see this when you first posted it, but I like it. The industrial area looks great, and I am very impressed with the layout of your university. The city is pretty, without being overly so. 44.gif

    Since I don't have a lot of time to consistently update this, I've decided to throw out a preview here and there during my busy times....just to keep the interest alive.

    Coming Soon...

    ...to The Patoka Bay Region

    In the next update, we'll get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and head off to the countryside.  We will be visiting the town of Albany.  Right in the heart of Patoka Bay's wine region, the vineyards around Albany have been producing great Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Late Harvest Riesling for well over a hundred years now.
