Here's my very 1st city, Shady Vale. This is a quiet cove, with a fairly touristy central beach area, small streets lined with blocks and blocks of shops, a light residential sprawl throughout the valley, and a good dirty industry base back in the hills. It reminds me a lot of Santa Cruz, except that there's no Boardwalk. I think I overdid some of the industry on the mountain ridges in this one (left edge), so it's starting to lose a bit of it's natural character, when I got caught up in trying to "fill" in optimal densities. For me, it takes a lot of self-restraint to try and leave greenspace, but it makes the cities look so much nicer when you do.

Note, the left edge of this city borders Devils Canyon.

Disclaimer: As with all of my towns, no cheat or plop of any kind is ever used in any city. The closest thing I'll do to a cheat is an "exit to region w/o save" if I screw something up.

Looks like a nice start. I know what you mean self-restraint when starting out. I always over-zone when I'm just starting a new region. Even now, after all the cities I've built, every time I start a new region, I make the same errors. Perhaps one thing, I would suggest not zoning all the way up to the shore. Leave a few tiles from the shore to make room for parks or a shorefront parkway or boulevard or something else. But that's just my personal suggestion.
