Getting out of My Documents

Hi.

I'm just curious if there is any way to get SC4 to store the downloads, regions, etc. in a different location than the My Documents folder.

I've tried relocating the folders from My Documents to where the game is actually installed (C:\Program Files\Sim City 4), and I've even tried creating a folder called My Documents under C:\Program Files\Sim City 4 and moved the subdirectories in there.  But of course if I start SC4 again, it re-creates the folder in My Documents and all my cities are lost.  Anyone have any ideas???

I really don't plan to do much downloading, sharing, etc, so junking up my documents with this stuff is a major annoyance.

Rant: I share a computer for work and home use and I'm one of these guys that keeps his computer very organized.  I must say I'm a bit peeved that some guy in California or wherever an importnat and much used part of my computer should be junked up with stuff for a game, and has given me no way to change where to keep this stuff.  I could've at least been asked during installation.

Thanks!!!

nope...think you stuck using the my documents section to access saved cities and regions...thats just the way it is as far as I know

if you have your saved cities and regions in the programs section...just copy them back to the my documents section...they will appear when you load the game again...1.gif

Atually, you can move the plugins folder. Go into the main program directory and go to where the SimCity4.EXE file is (C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4\Apps) and find some *.INI file, I think it's called SimCity 4.ini. There in the first part of the document is a little thingy called Directories. You can change the second one to whatever you want, I believe. It should work! 41.gif44.gif

Unless you know XP very well, you are stuck. However, you could move My Documents to another drive since it is controled either by the Registry or a System Variable (I forget which). Some of our members are current XP guruzim, and they may chip in on this as I see someone has above.

Be very careful. Downloads expect things to be in default location, and life can get very dicey with all the miscellaneous maintenance.

Using the Program Files folder for plugins is a nuisance, as this is not the default for most downloads. For Simtropolis downloads, I always use an folder named My Downloads, which, for convenience sake, I keep on my desktop. But then, I put them in a folder in there called Simtropolis which is also subdivided. Only the lots and dat files need find their way into your plugins folder under My Documents.

In my long experience with PC's (I've had one since the 1980's) moving things out of default locations for reasons of neatness involves more maintenance than it is worth.

If you think your plugins are messy, subdivide them into folders. The game doesn't care, nor the lot editor. However the BAT and the plugin manager want their stuff in the top level of the plugins directory. After you have finished with these programs you can put stuff where you like.
