passenger rail vs. subway

Is a ground passenger railway better than a subway. I started experimenting with a ground rail line and found that almost 3000 people were using just one standard small station. And they would take it farther than a subway. Which one is better for a large city.

Depends what you mean by better. Subway is 36% faster than ground rail. (Sims can go 36% further on it.) However, it's 10 times the price for track maintenance compared to subway.

If cost isn't an option, choose subway (or elevated rail). If cost and space isn't an option, choose monorail (it's the same price as subway, but 33% faster).

With a few modds like the plop-over-the-road subway stations, or transit-enabled stations, I think subways would be a bit more space efficient.

I agree, however if you have a rather large region and are trying to build realistic cities then ground level rails are better for long distances.

the relative subway and railroad speed is totally unrealistic in the game.
Passenger rails are way faster than subways in real life. .
