Living in Labrador's outback has some serious risks.

Bear in mind that Polar Bears are the TOP predator in the Arctic.  These bears can easily invade a house should they choose.

Climate change is making seal hunting difficult for them, and they will eat anything (anybody) they can catch.

People with polar bears as neighbours are not required to be armed?

    No, but it is not prohibited.  In this case it appears that the household depended on the Canadian Rangers bear patrol.  Canadian Rangers is an Arctic special force of the Canadian Army.
