Are our satellite systems safe from attack?

Here is what I hope is a speculative article.

There was at least one Bond film in which the protagonist snatched orbiters in order to start a war.  But what if the geosynchronous communications satellites that the military depend on these days were blown away?

No point in not discussing this.  The cat is out of the bag.

Well the US does have a number of back up satellites on stand by in case one starts to malfunction/gets shot down. Though still, shooting one down does give one an opportunity to attack while the US has more limited satellite back up, meaning a whole bunch of their C3 systems won't work/won't be efficient.

I'm quite sure that the US is working on something to defend their satellites though, given that its their biggest conventional weakness.
