I've read and seen a documentary about the Shackleton Expedition.  It is probably the ultimate tale of survival.

    Doesn't hold a candle to the guts and determination of the captain of the Bounty who was cast adrift in a small boat and navigated it, with most of his men to Timour.  William Bligh, like many of his contemporaries, had as a midshipman been required to memorize Norrie's Epitome of Navigation and it served him well.

    I had an 1844 copy of that book before I dissolved my library five years ago.
