...Several people in the channel’s fact-checking department, for example, were terminated on Tuesday, employees said.

Yeah, that's pretty much in line with the Murdoch philosophy.  Gotta cut that particular bloat first of all - no need for that in the media in today's day and age.

It's worth noting that the decision for the layoff wasn't a part of the Fox buyout. It was actually National Geographic's doing, figuring it would get more favorable terms if it lowered the axe before Fox did.

Also, only 4 of the layoffs are coming from the magazine group. Most are from shared resources, like legal teams, that Fox will provide.

Common people don't care about science and geography anymore. Nor do they care about print media. The magazine has been on a decline for decades and the TV channel is mostly trash now.

I usually don't post memes but this one is sadly relevant.

^That is sadly relevant, especially in regard to the "History" channel. What a joke it is now. (Not that I ever got to enjoy it in the "old days"). Even the history documentaries that they do put out are full of corny re-enactments and "exciting" music in the background.

I actually like National Geographic, so I hope we don't see it go.

I remember what Life magazine was in the 1940s and 1950s.  If it is still publishing after its fiasco in the 1980s, it can only be classified as a zombie (dead, but still around).  I also remember what television was like in the 1950s.  It has degenerated into Newton Minnow's "vast wasteland".

I remember a performance on Studio One (live TV) one evening which was a broadcast of Richard Strauss' Salome with a young, lithe Eartha Kitt as Salome and Peter Ustinov as Herod.  It was the first modern opera I'd ever seen, and it was impressive.  I don't think Eartha was wearing anything under that last veil that she held up before the camera.  Mr. Ustinov was either very surprised or a wonderful actor.

My grandmother still subscribes to National Geographic and I must say it is still top notch. I read it as well as Scientific American &c in the science and engineering library on campus.

Nonny Moose is right, television has become a vast wasteland. There are "a thousand channels but nothing to watch." Print media and the Internet are the only media I consume for entertainment. My new town also has more inexpensive live entertainment.

To give him his due, it was Newton Minnow who said that first some 50 years ago when he was Chairman of the FCC.

Only the public service channels are worth watching any more, and those not often.

The latest Mad. Ave. trick is the popup ads appearing in the lower left quadrant of the screen during the actual shows.  This is sufficient to cause me to boycott these advertisers.  Advertising seems to be aimed at the local village idiot.  Not only that, but repeating the same commercial in the same break, sometimes back to back, irritates me no end.  If I could pick up my anvil any more, I would throw it through the TV screen.  The implosion of the TV tube would give me great satisfaction as well as frighten the neighbours.  [Yes, I have a rather old, last generation set.  Ka-boom!]

As if to bring the whole discussion full circle, FOX (surprise?) has to be one of the biggest offenders with those "pop-up" ads.  Often they seem to take nearly a quarter of the screen "at rest" - at the beginning and end they may fade/magnify/whatever over the entire screen.  It's obnoxious.  And almost if not always for their other lousy programming.  I'd bet 75% of the ads and commercial spots on FOX are "self-ads", which is a total probably greater than the total on the next most ad-infested network, whatever one that is.  I used to say that it wouldn't faze me at all if FOX eventually became an all-commercial network.  And people would still watch it!

At least that was over a year ago when I last really watched anything.  It's been a while already since I ditched satellite - no problems whatsoever with the provider, just didn't watch enough any more to justify paying the bill - and went with just an HD antenna.  $30 at the Home Despot vs. $60/mo to the provider.  You do the math.

I've always enjoyed NG; it's too bad really.  I don't read the magazine very often but when I have it's usually been good.  Ditto the TV channel; it was probably in my top 5 for when I did have access to it.

A Freudian slip?  Or are you really being that facetious!?  In any case, well done.

I hardly ever watch TV anymore.  I used to watch the documentary channels such as Discovery and History when they had some interesting shows, and even the Weather Channel's documentaries.  Now it's mostly this "reality" junk.  I read National Geographic in the past; for a while my parents had a gift subscription for me.  I hate to see what Fox will do.

Oh, I always call it that.  Generally I slur most chain establishment names.  Worst Buy, Pizza Sl*t, Arbuckle's (Arby's), Sh*tmart (take a wild guess), J.C. Nickel's, CVS slash pharmacy, etc.  I don't know why I do it, really.

One name I do not use is Targét.  Nor do I append the suffix -vegas to place names.  Gotta have standards.

It is a shame really.  I like books, and they have much more substance than a tablet.  However, books use up trees, and trees help the atmosphere, so there are arguments against paper usage in any form.
