Trains -- Rail and Freight -- How To!?

I've been struggling with train stations in Rush Hour.  Where do you put a train station?  Next to the train track?  Between train track segments?  Surrounded by train tracks?  If you have to connect the track with a particular side of the train station, which side is it?  Will the station still function if the track is next to the station parking lot, rather than the shed or track area of the station?

Also, if you build a track headed into an area (an industrial area) is it really true that you don't necessarily need a station for the industrial zones to get use out of that train track?

I've spent all day here at work trolling the web to try to find a simple answer to these questions and all I can find is higher-level train strategy.  Is it discussed somewhere else in this forum?  Is there an illustration somewhere? 17.gif

Thanks!!!

If any part of the default train station is touching any part of the track (ie adjacent to) it will work. Same goes for freight. Side, angle, doesn't matter, just needs to touch the track some how.

If you want to force your industry to use the freight network to take those inefficient trucks off your lovely streets, just download the freight blocking tools which I can't rememberthe link too, but I'm sure they're on the stex.

Freight from industry can automatically go to a track without a freight station, but only if it's touching the track. Most industrial buildings won't be, and it's more efficient to build a single freight station in the middle of your industrial zone than try to conect every building with rail.

Welcome to Simtropolis. PM me or others if you need any help.

Both freight and passrenger train stations have just got to be next to (connecting) a track.

Passenger rail transport works by commuters going from there homes in the R zones to there work place in the C and I zones and back again. Passengers can only get on trains at the passsenger train station.

Freight works by freight going from the I zone to the edge of the map.Bear in mind if a industrey is next to a railway line. Then the freight from that industrey can go straght onto the trains without going via the freight train station.

i'm not sure but passenger trains must have at least 2 stations to work or a bus station to make any use of it I suggest you get those on road bus stops that ruin any block and are very annoying

Just as a side note; you do not need to build a parking lot next to a passenger station. They have one built in with them.

Extra quick note: But you do with subway, bus stops and monorail stations.

what i don't get is why commuters do not take transit from R Zones to I zones.

cities i design have the industrial land on the edges of the map, and residential/commercial in center, however nobody transports from R or C zones to I.  Is it because of the distance between zones

You will need to make sure that the transit options are more appealing than driving (i.e. shorter commute time, less congestion, etc.).

Also, make sure that your transit really serves both areas well. Make sure there are bus stops on both ends, not just in your residential. Also, give your Sims options if you haven't already. Supplement your heavy rail with monorail or subway.
