Students not attending university!

i have a city with 6000 stundents and cannot hit 2000 mark in my university...

i have full transportation, maglevs, streetcars and of course a lot of traffic doens't matter what i do...

I don't think thats the issue...

 

 

oh, and no schools not schools bus stops... (after I BULLDOZED all of it, my university attendance took off a little bit)

Make sure you plop dormitories, which max out at three. Dorms provide additional students to the university 1) without requiring you to zone more residential and 2) allow students to go to class without increasing road traffic. In addition, dorm students also shop at nearby commercial buildings and therefore will increase their happiness.

 

You don't need to bulldoze other schools to reach upgrade thresholds. For example, my preferred city layout is composed of a central complex of services (schools, fire, police, medical, etc.) surrounded by zones of C and R to minimize traffic issues. I usually have several of these in my city. If my university is not hitting the student threshold, you can power down (not bulldoze!) as many schools as necessary to force the students to go to the university.

 

This approach has important caveats. First, it is unlikely that the students attending your (now) powered-down schools will ALL end up at the university because of commuting/traffic limitations. This will be more evident once you have a city population in the 6-digit range. Related to this, be careful when doing this in a city with a lot of medium- or high-tech industry. Shutting schools increases the number of students that are NOT enrolled. If you run it long enough your tech level will decrease and your industries will start complaining about the lack of skilled workers, and eventually leads to abandonment if not alleviated. As short as a 24 hr run is enough for this to occur.

 

Note that the university and community college are unlike the grade and high school because they have four teaching shifts (6 am, 9 am, 12 noon, 3 pm). The university can only accommodate a maximum of 1,300 students per shift and there's no way to increase it. This is actually a source of irritation because I often hit the limit for the 6 a.m. shift but not for the rest. Also, since classes start in the morning (I believe it's 6 am for the grade and high school), power off your schools just before that, NOT much earlier or later (e.g. midmorning) to maximize the effect of displacing the students to your university.

 

As a last point, make sure that mass transit going to the university is up and well-running to ensure that student Sims can reach their classes on time.
