Importing images into Terrain Generator

Terrain Generator is refusing to import (either on Load or Load Resize and Convert) the images I'm trying to feed it, claiming that they are not 8 or 24-bit images. Windows identifes this image (high-resolution) as 8-bit, Paint Shop Pro identifies it as 8-bit, apparently Photoshop says it's 8-bit, the UNIX tool file says it's an 8-bit image, etc.

    /home/chris/wales-stage4.png: PNG image data, 2625 x 2049, 8-bit grayscale, non-interlaced

What should I do with it?

Chris the image you show in the link is a png - needs to be a jpg or bmp I think :-) btw nice pic of the Gower - I am just off the map to the east :-)

Edit - I just saved the image as a bmp and it loads into generator - the levels are all wrong though mate needs to be lightened across the whole greyscale spectrum - in the original you drowned all of Swansea, and the gower peninsular :-)

That'll be a bug, then. As well as JPEG and Windows Bitmap, the load dialog offers to open GIF and PNG images, which it shouldn't be doing unless it'll support them. That said, it wouldn't accept the 8-bit bitmap I fed it originally ...

The absolute greyscale level isn't important, as long as the range is right, since that can be shifted both with the palette and in the generator itself. Well, almost. Annoyingly I'll have to fiddle with a slightly lower level to get the beach along the bay to show properly since the data I have shows it at the same level as most of the surrounding land. Either the whole of central Swansea is a beach (which can't be built upon) or the beach itself is usable land. Looks like I'll have to sculpt that out manually.

Annoyingly, I can't load both the terrain image and an existing config bitmap at the same time, so filling the county will be interesting (the area of the whole map is 32x41 tiles).

Incidentally, I'm working on cutting data for a variety of areas, so if you want a slice of Wales, let me know. 1.gif
