I am pretty novice so I trying to figur things out.I can get a city going and making money with no issues however, when I start to rezone residential to get skyscrapers, my buildings will build but then the unemployment goes through the roof. I then watch demand and start zoning high density commercial and industrial and then the commute time goes high enough for the high density residential to become abandonded; very frustrating.

Before you zone hi density residential, make sure you have enough jobs and also make sure these jobs are close to the residential areas.

Quick question: where do you see if you have enough jobs in your city? I am still trying to figure out graphs (unsuccessfully I may add lol). Is there such a thing as a mod that actually could give you information as to how many sims you have per level ($,$$,$$$), how many commercial and industrial jobs you have in the city, etc without having to click each buildings in your city? Something like a census data...

Thanks!

In the Graphs menu there is a Population & Jobs area where you can get a rough number of each density population/job in your city. It doesn't give you an exact number representation but rather a graph, you'd have to approximate the figures you're seeing.

In the same menu, it by default shows everything (making a very cluttered line graph) but you can disable for example all except low density/low wealth stuff to only get the amount of R$, C$ and I$ in your city.

Sounds like you might be interested in either of these:

Census Repository Facility (you need to be registered over at the SC4D LEX)

the Census Repository Facility's query file as a dependency)

Personally I find the larger variant of the census repository a bit ridiculous looking but the smaller one fits in well in many situations.  I only discovered the Chamber of Commerce today.  You could add that query to any custom building with a little work in Reader.

A belated welcome to Simtropolis.

The big issue is jobs, jobs, jobs!  You must create jobs before you can expect to attract Sims.  One of the major built-in factors is that the model is the core American family with only one breadwinner, so the ratio of Sims to Jobs is about 2:1.

If you are just starting out, don't expect to get major skyscrapers anytime soon.  Start with low density commercial and residential and/or maybe a few farms (use the basic SPAM farms for seasonal stuff).

To make sure we have a level playing field, please tell us what version of the game you are running?  Is it from CD or a digital download?  If from CD, did you get the two necessary patches to bring you up to the current build level of 1,1,640?  Most players are at this level or at 1,1,641 (digital download).

You can zone for tall buildings with 4 x 4 high density lots, but if you don't have the population support these will quickly abandon.

    Moose,

I appreciate the reply, I am running a digital download from Origin. After some other research and looking around I think I am going to have to go ahead and buy the game off of amazon, because I got the shitty old patch from origin that I cannot install the NAM mod. Thanks for all the help and replies.

I would definitely ask Origin for a refund.

I would recommend buying the game from Steam. It is the latest version and you are not required to install any patches (except maybe the I-HT census patch). I believe it may be about 5$ more than amazon, but you will have the ability to play it right away without having to worry if you have the right version, patches, etc.

And Nonny Moose is right, you should definitely get a refund.

Good luck with this! I know I am still struggling with it..lol but I have a great mentor who has provided a lot of great advices.

    :)

The Amazon version should be the same as the Steam version with one exception.  It doesn't pretend to be DRM.  Steam has a funny idea about that, and wants you to log on to their system in order to play.  Pfui!

I am glad I ordered the CD version so that I can make whatever changes I want to it in addition, I don't always have connectivity in third world countries and would like to be able to not have to log in to play.

I purchased the digital download from Amazon last year ($14.99 IIRC) and have never had any problems with it either online, offline, running under Windows or Mac OS (Wine).  No DRM, CDs or any other nonsense attached to it.  Although you are able to burn the download to a disc or disc image if you so choose for backup purposes, you won't need it to run the game.

And I the same except I got it from GamersGate.

I don't understand the comment about being able to do things to it.  1,1,641 contains both published patches and is diskless.  I have the installer saved in a couple of places.

Since I am on Linux, I always run under wine.  Some little hiccups, but they are trivial.
