Looking for advice on indie game

Hi guys,

I'm in the process of developing a text-based 4X strategy game that includes a city-building component. I'm not satisfied with the depth of the city-building module as it stands, and was hoping that as gamers with lots of experience in city-builders, you might be able to offer some suggestions.

Right now, players can establish new cities, which gradually increase in population. Players can construct buildings in the city, and as the population grows, the city will increase in level, which will allow more buildings to be constructed. At their most basic, buildings are one of residential (increases population, allowing the city to grow faster), industrial (produce manufactured goods necessary to upgrade cities and construct military units), science (research new technologies), and military (produce supply for military campaigns). New buildings are unlocked by pursuing tech.

Among the ideas I'm looking at to increase depth are: lootable artifacts that grant cities unique bonuses, and power plants that would introduce an efficiency management aspect.

Would love to hear what the community has to say about this.

There are lots of ideas in on-going development projects, here.  While they are devoted to city simulations, you might find them interesting.  It might also be a good idea to look at the recently released and the rest of the city-building games category.

I am not sure that with the militaristic view you are taking that this game will fly with city building as a side line.  Sounds more like an empire builder.  If it is text-based, you will certainly have problems.  Things are now 3D, multitasking, full GUI.  The days of Adventure and Rogue are kind of past.
