When cities "peak" and then stagnate (my first post) : )

Hi all,

so I've been playing a while and I always reach a point with a city where it's got big buildings and a few cool things - airport, stadia etc., but there always seems to come a point where things just seem to level out and stop. The city is in profit, the mayor rating is great, health and education good (blah blah blah) but then no further progress is ever really made - anyone got any ideas / experience.

Pic attached show the furthest I've ever really got with a city (and many cities) and I don't know what to do or how to progress beyond this.

All and any advice much appreciated.

Best wishes

Monty

PS - I'm playing a pretty "vanilla" version of Deluxe with the NAM installed and not much else.

It sounds like you're suffering from demand caps. You can read more about it (here, for example), but basically, the city populations (R,C and I) all limited by the simulation. In order to increase the city beyond the limit, you must add amenities like parks or make connections to other cities (or Sim nation).

That city looks quite large, though, and I see a stadium, airport and so on, so you've done quite well. I don't see any connections with other cities; if you have less than 3 connections per type (road, highway, rail, etc.), then adding some will raise the demand caps for CO and I.

Edit: a great mod for adding more info to the query tool. It's by Equinox and you can find lots of info and pics about how to use it

Welcome to the conversation.

I have found cities to by cyclic and there are occasions when things seem stagnant.

It might be a demand cap situation, which can be broken by adding something like a park or plaza.  An airport is a really heavy cap breaker for commercial.  Often, the best way to revive a city to through neighbour connections.

Take a look at your education by age graph and the display as well.  If the city is fairly well on in age, say 100 Sim-years, blue areas on this display may indicate the need for adult recreation facilities such as museums, libraries and more parks.  Check your schools.  Very low enrolment schools can be replaced by museums and libraries.

All good suggestions above.  One added one is to make sure your mass transit system is quite extensive.  It is good that you have NAM (version 32 I assume).  Even with NAM, I have found that as cites grow larger, they need a lot of mass transit in place to keep the sims moving and stimulate growth of the larger buildings.

All the above sound right, but I was thinking that its a result of the opera house bug. Once you place the maxis reward opera house it sucks up its visitors. Seriously, they enter and get stuck in it. You can find a mod on the stex for it. Even if it is one of the above reasons- be sure to get the opera house fix for the future.

Good luck!
