Off-line play question

I saw the new SimCity 2013 for sale at Walmart.  But the box says:  "requires persistent internet connection."  I've read that offline play is possible now.  Does one need to buy a special SimCity 2013 for that? . . .  one that doesn't say "requires persistent internet connection"?  Or how does that work?  Thanks in advance and apologies if it has been asked before!

I don't know for sure, but I guess that you'll have to update the game with an internet connection until the patch nº 10, in which the offline play was made available. So, box -> install -> update and then you can play offline.

The box may have been produced before they released the offline version. You will most definitely need internet connection to install the game, set up Origin, and download any updates and patches. Once things get rolling, you can switch it to "Single Player Mode".

 

Does the game still try to connect to the internet while playing single player? I actually don't know since I'm always online anyway, but if it does it's most likely for DRM reasons.

 

EDIT: I just ran a quick test for you (I'm feeling generous today) I yanked the Ethernet cable from my desktop and fired up the game, Single Player mode does indeed run fine without any internet connection. Good to know if you want to play on a laptop on a trip or something.
