War Thunder is a free-to-play MMO, where money only grant you a faster planes and upgrades research and other lesser additions which are solely visual (which means this is not a pay-to-win game).

Gaijin project is pretty ambitious: to create an MMO that encompasses air, earth and water units.

At the moment you can only pilot planes, while the ground part, which lets you drive tanks, is in closed-beta status. In the future Gaijin will implement ships too. They're also planning to introduce new game modes like the World War and other things.

I've created an account and downloaded the client (6 gigabytes) and I must say the game is very good. The developers are the ones who created IL-2 Sturmovik (for those of you who know it), which is a guarantee of success.

In case you were interested, it is possible to pilot the planes using the mouse. I've tried both the mouse and the joystick and both are good depending on which game mode you're playing (the are three: Arcade, Realistic and Simulator). The latter two require a joystick to be used for best results, while the former will give you the most joy using a mouse.

Waiting times to find a match are below the minute in Arcade mode, a couple of minutes for Realistic mode and below 10 minutes in Simulator mode.

On a side note, at the moment there are around 350 different planes, but developers aim to introduce something like 5000 different models, which is the number of airplanes who crossed the skies in the timespan that went from the Second World Conflict to the Korea war.
