Riverdale - Queries

Hi Guys,

New to the forum but been following topics on here for awhile. For the last couple of months I have been planning on building a new region incorporating various plugins which I never used previously. So this region 'Riverdale' is my project I plan to implement for now. I thought it would be better to keep it in a single thread for any queries that I may have, and to include details that may be relevant to give an opinion.

I am currently working on central city and soon will move towards my other major city from scratch as well as change terrains in empty plots.

Following is my region image:

So basically I have commute from central city (CC) to modern city (MC) through RHW as well as ground rail. Further I have commute from MC to industrial support city (ISC) as shown though the plotted lines. So basically my question is in relation to eternal commuter loop . Is it possible for it to exist through black path that I have shown in the image above. Maybe not eternal loop but even a path for job?

It is possible, but by the looks of the map you have jobs close to the borders and neighbour connections and hence the sims will probably go to those jobs and not to an infinite loop.

What does your route query say and what are the populations of each city?

The general symptom of the presence of the eternal loop is that you have more traffic on the neighbour connection that there are Sims in the current city.  In this particular case, I don't think this can happen.  Takes a loop between a minimum of three cities.

As ROFLyoshi and A Nonny Moose stated, keep a close eye on your neighbor connections.  Us the traffic view or route query to see if any of your neighbor connections turns red and check the volume of traffic.  If an eternal commuter loop does get establish you can try the following:

1) Zone more commercial or industrial near the city border so sims can find a job in the start or destination city.

2) Change the road configuration to break the loop.

3) Place a toll booth on the roads with the eternal commuter loop.  This may cause some of the sims to find another route to work.  At the very least it will generate some income for you.

Route query shows a movement as i described. However, it isn't a major problem now since I already nipped a potential loop when I removed a avenue path from CC to ISC. My secondary question will be how is commuter make the decision when they go to a neigbouring city? I mean when do they decide to look for job in the current city or in another neighbouring city.

The general symptom of the presence of the eternal loop is that you have more traffic on the neighbour connection that there are Sims in the current city.  In this particular case, I don't think this can happen.  Takes a loop between a minimum of three cities.

I understand, like it is city A>B>C>A. I was wondering if it also works as A>B>C>B>A using different networks.

Cheers. In this region, I am avoiding creating any loops as much as possible and connecting individual routes to neighboring cities and so on and so forth. Its just something I noticed which could probably cause some trouble with long commute problems in the parent city.

Moreover I think I should clarify I don't see any eternal loop happening right now. I am just gauging if such a path could happen to cause it.

Any loop involving at least three cities will do it.  Transit type jumping is common.  I have one right now involving ferry, EL, Roads and ground heavy rail.  I know I can kill it by deleting the ferry, but I am trying other methods.  This seems to involve several city tiles, BTW.

Yes, but if there is no job in either, the outbound route will be taken.

I have couple of more questions:

Is it possible to make 90° turns using RHW-6 or higher?

Also, I was planning on creating a estuary in my region. Are there tools apart from the one in mayor mode that can help with this? The reason being I would need small area of focus to create miniature land masses.

I don't really know, but I doubt it.  Highways don't make 90 degree turns, more likely to be a spiral segment.

You can return to full god mode by pressing CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+<click the god icon>.  This next applies to all tools:

You can control the radius of any tool from default to very tiny.  This is done using combinations of keys.

The CTRL key reduced the radius of effect by 50%

The Shift key doubles the radius of effect

Shift+<number key> changes the radius from very small (1) to maximum (9).  Reset by pressing shift again.

Shift+<number key>+<function key> changes both the radius of effect and the strength of the brush. (F1 - F9).  F1 being lightest.

Thanks. That helps a lot with terrain modifications.

Hopefully I can find some alternatives to make the turn using RHW-6.
