Well, you either have the brown box substitution mod from PEGasus, or you have some HD props and are running software mode.  The other possibility is that your GPU settings are wrong for the game.

 

To handle HD props you must run in hardware rendering mode.

 

To fix your GPU, you either have to set a profile for the game, if your GPU controller has that option, or generally set all 3D controls to be "application selected" or equivalent.

 

I don't use the PEG mod, I'd just as soon have the brown boxes.  I actually don't have any at the moment.  If it is a missing prop problem, you'll need to look at those lots showing the problem and verify all the dependencies.

I thought of PEG Oops mod too, but since the problem seems to arise on maxis residential lots I'm leaning towards a plugin conflict; probably prop/building family IDs.

 

Have you installed billboards or something similar in your plugins recently?
