Here is my computer

I had no problems until I received an update for Win 8.1 a week or so ago. Now I have been seeing some issues with graphics.

Something seems to have invalidated your drivers.  Try updating your graphics drivers.  Failing that, see if you can back out the update.

FWIW, I have heard of others who started having graphics problems as soon as they upgraded to Windows 8.1; having the latest drivers didn't help.

Everything was ok with the default Win 8.1 that I had already, then I had an update to the 8.1 which is the issue now.

Apparently 8.1 has some issues regarding video drivers.

I had to tinker for a while to fix it.  Automatically updating the driver appears to give you a sub-optimal version.  Downloading the driver directly from the source fails to install it.  So I uninstalled my driver completely:

    • Right click on the Start icon from your Desktop
    • "Device Manager"
    • Expand "Display Adapters" and double-click on the driver
    • Find the "uninstall" button

I ended up installing a driver I had downloaded a few months ago; for some reason that worked.  Something else you might try first is manually updating the driver rather than automatically.  From the Driver Properties window (same place you would uninstall it from), click the Update button.  But then browse manually for the driver.  If you have downloaded (but not installed) the latest version, you should be able to find and select it.

Hope you can figure it out.  I was really frustrated with it and it took a while to fix.

Success.  I rolled back the driver from 9/16 to 2/22

This appears to be one of those occasions when Microsoft issued an update in haste and the users get to regret it later.  Send them a bug report, and you can thus join the chorus of users who won't tolerate bad quality assurance.

I'm having the same issue after updating to Windows 8.1, exact same graphics problems as shown above.  I am very uneducated when it comes to drivers, and under "Display Adapters" it says "Intel® HD Graphics 4000" which I assume is the Graphics Driver.  How do I install an older version of the driver?  Should I download an older version online and install that?  Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

EDIT:  I rebooted the software under Software Rendering Mode which seems to have fixed the problem, but I would still like it to run perfectly in Hardware mode so I'm leaving this question up.

I rolled back my driver, but first you need to have it. Do a search on the 2/22/13 driver. i have the same Driver, the Intel HD 4000 series.

My comp is doing this on 8.1

I'm not going to even attempt to fix this, every time I try to fix these kinds of issues I end up majorly stuffing my comp up. Will Windows release an update to fix these issues?

Probably, but don't hold your breath.  Meanwhile you can play on software rendering.

As a matter of interest, it has taken the Linux/wine developers nearly five years to solve the problem in the interface that now allows me to play in hardware rendering.  Whatever was going on has improved significantly and my game no longer breaks down into colour patches after 10 minutes in hardware rendering.  Something to do with buffer switching, I believe.  At the same time, I've had to switch drivers because the AMD driver is no longer maintained on this version of the Linux kernel.  I am using the default driver from Xorg apparently.  Works quite well with only a few frogs.  Obscure graphics software problems are not often easily fixed.
