apologies if this is the wrong forum for this.

Help me understand something.  In my main CBD (primarily a mix of med/high density commercial and residential) why do some buildings get abandoned for long commute times when those sims, who have perfectly good jobs all around them with no traffic problems and a well organized subway/bus system still choose to travel by car all the way out to the outskirts of my town to the shopping districts and industrial zones around the suburbs?  I always thought sims will take the closest job available?  If so, does that mean I have too much residential in my CBD?

You need to look what kind of job you need. e.g. If your downtown has many §§§ wealth homes but lots of §§ weatlh jobs, they will find a job elsewhere....for. Also sometimes commuting is just bugged in SC4, especially when they travel to neighbouring cities for jobs.

General discussion might be a better forum.

Anyway, the cause of your problem might be the one YUUU mentioned. The demand of residential/commercial is partly linked. People with a high wealth have high wealth jobs. This doesn't mean that a building with for example CO$$$400 jobs have 400 high wealth jobs. At every building there are as well high wealth as medium and low wealth jobs, because you've got managers as well as janitors. If you want to reduce commute time it's important to build zones near the zone with abandonment following the demand. If the demand allows you to zone commercial services you could build low density zones, those will mostly be filled by services.

Another important thing is that the public transport is well linked from residential to commercial and to neighboring cities. When people can't find the right jobs in the city they look for the right jobs in neighboring cities, if the connection is not good enough this might lead to a long commute time. Another thing that might help is the combination of different networks, I use the subway as well as elevated rail, elevated rail is faster than subway, that might help. The use of heavy rail and monorail/High Speed Rail (also available in the latest NAM) is also helpful. These networks should be well connected to each other via stations.

Thank you both.  I have a well connected bus and subway in my cbd and highway system from my suburbs to my cbd.  Almost all my residential high density in and around the cbd has short commute times.  All of my suburbs have short to medium commute times.  But there are a few pesky buildings in my cbd who are travelling out of the cbd, past the suburbs, past the industrial complex and all the way to a neighboring farm city to work... why not just move to that small town if you're gonna work there?

Oh well, can't expect a game to have perfect AI I guess.

These people probably had a job in that city that wasn't available at your main city. You could try to zone some farms. My guess is that they travel in your city after that (after some game-months/years).

I have noticed that... I'll have a building that has short commute times for years and then I come back later and it's long commute times... the opposite happens too

Strange, how many people travel by car/subway/bus?
