Funny. I was fiddling with my hoodie zipper a few days ago and was honestly wondering when the zipper was developed. Thanks for sharing.

The interesting thing is the air-tight zipper for undersea and space suits.  What would we have done without this idea, or if it has continued to be a failure?

 

I only need to point out that the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria died because he was sewn into his uniform, there being no zippers at the time.  He bled to death before they could get his clothes off to treat his wounds.

Its amazing 100 years later we are using the same technology everyday in our clothes, but if it works why not?

If it's not broken, don't fix it. 

 

All that has ever been done with the zipper fastener is that it has been occasionally refined for special purposes.  Do you use Ziploc bags?  It is one of the later refinements, and doesn't really have visible teeth.

 

Interestingly, with all our advancements in technology, no one has ever come out with an economic replacement, eh?  Fundamental things like doing yourself up seem to be static.  We would probably need contact with an extra-terrestrial civilization to find out if anything better could be found.  Zippers may be Earth's most famous and profitable export to the galactic federation.

Zippers may be 100 years old but it wasn't until Velcro that we got rip-away stripper outfits.
