Anyone knows a free to use picture editing software? like photoshop but then free?

Im currently using paint in editing my pictures for my CJ, but i find it very limited in its use compared to photoshop that i've used before.

But for photoshop you need to buy the package and its very expensive in my opinion.

Hope anyone can provide me a good solution to the matter...

GIMP is a very good image editor that's free. Just Google it.

When you downloaded the GIMP, I hope you get the tutorial with it (Grokking the GIMP).  It is also free as a download or you can purchase a copy at some technical bookstores.  And I hope you noticed that the help files are a separate free download.

Of some interest to computer people is GTK, the GIMP Tool Kit.  This is the basis of many Linux desktops.

If you want an flexible but easy to use Image editor, I recomend the free Google Picasa.  Its purpose is mainly organizing photos/images, but it has quite some nice tools for resizing and editing of images.

Editors are like religions.  Everyone to his own taste.

Lately I've been fooling a bit with inkscape.  It seems to be very powerful, and its automatic resizing capabilities are fascinating.

I've also been playing a bit with Blender.  Quite a jump from Gmax/BAT.  Blender is also a freebie, and does 3D including animation.  If you want to fool a bit with CGI it is probably a good starting point.

You can also do 2D animation in GIMP (you need the GAP plugin package).

This is a very simple GIMP animation.  DkpKTtg.gif

And to answer the question about the GIMP, I think it originated in the GNU project at the University of Washington and was originally developed on UNIX.  However, as most things UNIX have now migrated to Linux ...

    Paint.net is also very good.

Does it require the .net framework?  Which version?

For the GIMP, I don't use the latest version, but rather version 2.6. Why? v2.6 allows to save to common file formats directly, while version 2.8 only does that by exporting the images; it can only save directly to it's own format XCF. This means that a simple CTRL+S combination when editing a PNG or JPEG file doesn't work anymore, which is very annoying for me when working on hundreds of textures...

Good point.  I am on 2.8 and don't find exporting very onerous, but then I don't do that many, either.  Why they made this change is as mysterious as why I got a Linux Kernel update this morning.  There are always new bugs being fixed.  Have you tried Inkscape?  I think it has the same problem.

Oh have I tried InkScape? I'm a master at it! :D But Inkscape is for vector images, which is a whole different cup of tea than the GIMP. It can open and save to any vector format immediately. You can only export to PNG, though, but it does it nicely. I've managed to do this so far with InkScape:

    - Signage recreations, lots of them

    - Geographical maps from my fictional country

    - RHW v5.0 Euro Texture, lots of them (about 4000)

    - Ponies! (plus my current avatar)

    - Quite some work for the university...

    Best,

    Maarten

Photoshop is a) not free and b) doesn't run native on Linux.  GIMP on the other hand is the native graphics package for Linux and is free and supported.

A Nonny Moose: huh I never took you for a linux user?

Well anyway I also Reccomend gimp, I have found that it's not very difficult to transition from photoshop to gimp, the controls are there, just in a different place, in fact the graphic art and game programming glasses I took in school used photoshop, and with a bit of effort those skills transitioned over into gimp fairly easily.

What, you don't read my signature lines.  I change them once in a while too.  Watch that space.  I've been on Linux since early in this century.  When Vista came out and I needed more hardware, I chose a smaller software footprint.  Never looked back.

As I understood Thunderman, he does NOT have Linux and I thought he had photoshop, at least he used it before.

I know that Photoshop is not free, I had to buy two copies for my offices and believe me, they're expensive.

Btw, GIMP works well on simple Windows XP also.

But why that comment on Photoshop not running on Linux and is not free? That wasn't my question to Thunderman.... o.O

I've used Photoshop before, and i find it a very powerfull tool, but like others have said, it aint free and it's indeed expensive to buy it, (like buying a microsoft product is also expensive!)

But i've tried Gimp and it confused me alot in using it, read the tutorial but still couldn't figure this out how to do things like i used to do with Photoshop.

Luckily, i dove back into my Photoshop directory and found a cr*ck!

Activated it and now i got a free copy :P (ssshh!, dont tell anyone  :P )

So happy me is back on Photoshop again :P Soon you'll see the differences in my newly started CJ  ;)

But thanks for the suggestions guys!  :thumb:
