Modifying Data.package to change locale (language file)

I am one of many people who purchased a language locked (Hungarian, Polish, Russian) SimCity game to save a few $$$. The thought was we would be able to swap the English Data.package (in SimCity/SimCityData/Locale/pl-pl) over to get the game in our preferred language. The following method floating around the web does not work.

Doing so results in this error message. (Yes we have redeemed it just does not work in English)

 

 

Opening the english Data.Package up with a hex editor, you can find a couple area's that might be edited to maybe get around this error, and force the game into thinking you are using a supported Data.package file. Searching for value's such as "Locale", and changing English to Polish, or searching for "ENUS" and changing it to "PLPL".

 

 

 

 

 

But unfortionatly I end up corrupting the file and end up with this error. I am guessing I should be editing with something else besides a hex editor.

Any help would be greatly apreciated.

I think i have finally cracked the stupid thing. Can someone please test it and report back?

 

UPDATE: It seems to work fine I'll keep this first post updated with newest version of the Russian and Hungarian to English translation fix.

 

NEWEST V.2.0 - 24-04-2013

 

For Hun to Eng: 

 

1. install game in Hungarian

2. update game, and start the tutorial

3. quit game

4. go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\SimCity\SimCityData\Locale\hu-hu

5. rename original data.package to data.package.bak

6. copy cracked hu_data.package to C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\SimCity\SimCityData\Locale\hu-hu

7. Rename file from hu_Data.package to Data.package

 

For Rus to Eng:

 

1. install game in Russian

2. update game, and start the tutorial

3. quit game

4. go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\SimCity\SimCityData\Locale\ru-ru

5. rename original data.package to data.package.bak

6. copy cracked data.package to C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\SimCity\SimCityData\Locale\ru-ru

7. Rename file from ru_Data.package to Data.package

 

Run game and have fun!!

Thank you sct_nicolaus for your package, it worked well until the new update.

Now, the date file got replaced by a newer one so I want to modify it just like you did. I've opened your data.package with SimCityPak and I've seen what you modified but unfortunately, I can't find the right program to open the file correctly and modify the two lines.. I've tried some hex editors but the file always end up corrupted..

 

So please, can you tell me what software you used to modify the file ?

I took a look in the Data.package and found a PROP string in  simcitypak that contains strings about the language, however i cant seem to find the same string in s3pe.  sct_nicolaus would you mind to share the changes you did to the data package files so that i can do the tweaks myself the next time it updates?  im guessing there will be a fair amount of updates the coming days.

Sure! 

1. Open the new Rus/Pol/Hun data.package file and any version of the en_us data.package file in S3pe.

2. mark and copy all the JSON strings (Only these!) from the en_us file.

3. Paste into the Rus/Pol/Hun string list, and make sure you put a checkmark in Overwrite.

4. save the Rus/Pol/Hun data.package, you will see all the old JSON strings disappears. 

5. Voila, you got a working english file! - The other 2 files every other trick out there suggest, arent really needed. A few strings wont be translated, but it is almost nothing.

I know that modifying game's files is fun and rewarding, but I found another way to change game's language.

I've just contacted Origin support via live chat and they've changed my language version (although it required re-downloading whole game as it had different app-ip or something and I forgot to back up previous version)

Yep. Polish retail. Explained a guy that I'm a foreigner living here so such version of the game is not really useful for me.

Yeah, got boxed copy. 

If you've got it from online reseller then... well... you have to be creative. You can try to tell them that you got it from your ancient Polish grandma or something I don't think that they can tell if your serial number is from digital or boxed version (afaik lots of serials sold by unofficial resellers are taken from boxed versions).

But if you've already contacted EA support with different story, then it might be problematic.

Thanks for uploading those packs, they work just fine.   BUT I have a question: Is there any way to chance these text lines, appearing on the region wall, to english? I don't speak any Hungarian so it's kinda annoying.

Hey guys, I'm having trouble opening the data.package in s3pe, downloaded the latest version from their site and I get an error saying "Expected major version '2'.  Found '3'"

 

Trying to change the language to English after the latest update..

anyone have a fix for the russian version for the latest patch...have not had trouble with any updates so far but this one i just cant get to work.

 

the patch will apply and the server selection screen will change to english - it will then tell me to restart and it will change back to russian and then give me the play button to start the game.
