I'm guessing there's no difference between el-train and monorail, besides appearance?

Monorail is a gbzillion times faster, and I think the capacities are different as well. Plus the expense...

I too get lots of income from mass-transit, and EL-rail is a good way to express myself in CJs and actually get people moving through a city.

My main reasons for using El-Rail are:
  1. Suburbs have conjested roads heading into town (If you look at my CJ, certain parts of Los Porablos is spidered with El-Rail).
  2. The heavy districts that already have subway are so conjested, capacity has been reached.  Adding to the point that the feeder El-Lines really do help.
  3. Certain areas of my city crop up with a space in-between zones, and this runs down a line or I make it run down a line, and the result is that I built the El-Rail.
  4. In a packed city full of skyscrapers, it's always nice to know that deep in the darkness of the city, there's a bunch of trains servicing the community elevated in the air.  This describes a 'multi-level' city.
My reasons for choosing El-Rail over monorail:
  1. I never get into a situation where I need to build a monrail to connect San Portello together - its mostly highways & railways.
  2. I use monorail in HT zones or in HT cities, where fast transit is required.  I also use them as a 'looping' system, rather than a transit system that stops.
  3. I assosiate monorails with eye candy.

I like monorail over El Rail, mainly because when you have light rail your monorails arent overwritten with lrt vehicles like your El trains are. To me, trams on the elevated tracks dont look right, and long el type trains on lrt doesnt look right either.

Plus, since monorails are faster, i like to use them to link cities together when they dont have a huge amount of industry that needs to have railroads(a just bit of low density industry generates a mother load of truck traffic, trains seem to be a neccessity when you have lots of industry and dont want to have clogged streets.

Problem with the monorails is that there are only 2 types: the ugly red default maxis one, and the Bay area rapid transit white one, thats smooth and less pixelly, but just as boring. We need more monorails!

I have a different opinion about the eye candy, since El Rail and Subways are one in the same transit system, and Monorail is a completely different system, and will carry some of the traffic load.  To me that makes El rail the eye candy, which might be desirable when making pretty CJ's.

Without a doubt monorail is hard to work with, but no harder to work with than El rail.

Wow Tungston,  that's alot of $ from your mass transit.  The best I've gotten so far is $25,000 from both fares and tolls.  Hopefully we I'm done revamping it I'll be able to make that much.

Yes, I know I am repeating myself when I say that fares from mass transits are a major part of the income in the cities I do.

Pixelrage:  I think if you do some research you will find that the only resemblance that El rail has to monorail is the word rail.  The rails don't even look the same.  Well, they do both carry passengers.

ElRail, subway and regular rail travel at the same speed - 150 km/h Monorail travels at 200 km/h

Not quite. Regular rail has a network speed of only 110. Subway and elevated are 150. Monorail is 200.

It's not in km/h units, either, it's just internal tile units. You could work out the speed, though. Monorail goes 200 tiles in 1 internal time interval, which is actually 25 minutes on the commute graph. Each tile is 16 metres in length.

So, that works out to a monorail speed of 3.2 km in 25 minutes, or just 7.68 km/h. And that's the fastest network speed in the game! No wonder why sims take so long to get somewhere!

Are these incredibly low average speeds the reason for the 10xfaster, etc, files in the NAM, then?

I've only just started playing around with the el-trains (and the GLR, for that matter, too!), but I still need to work on getting my usage rates higher than 1% or 2% before I figure out what benefit they deliver over heavy rail...

I Prefer the EL-Rail since its part of the subway system, and can easily be poped underground if there is a block you wat to save, or when the density gets to high. I use Monorail too, but for LongHaul(Atleast one Large Tile.

The Reason for this is that While the EL(And subway) get congested, it dosnt effect there speed, they work just as well empty as many times overfull, which means a lot of stops on a congested line dosnt hinder the speed.
Meanwhile the Monorail has longer stops which also get even longer the more congested the monorail is. so Monorail is essentially comuterrail, fast and with long and few stops.

Cheers

I have a similar experience as Tungston, in my largest city all my income per monthly is only from transit fare (no tolls). This is several thousand $/mnth. This has allowed me to reduce my taxation by 2-4%
I use all forms of transit in this city - bus, passenger, el, mono, one way, road, aveneue, ground highway, el highway, etc.

Prefer ground rail to other forms of rail

~105 K R
~180 K C
~7 K I

I like the monorail better than the El train. It looks better and it gives the Solar Power Plant, while El train gives absolutely nothing. 3.gif
I also have subways that don't take much space, so why use the El trains?

For realistic purposes, for the sheer cost of subway construction and maintanence makes it sensible to limit its underground portions to extremely dense populations and switch to overground lines (open-cut and elevated subway) for medium and low density areas. They're like the symbol of the urban experience as much as skyscrapers are.

And as a few-times-a-week rider of an elevated subway line, I can vouch for the fact it's nice to have sunlight and stuff to look at.

I've been wondering something. Does having an El-rail nearby add to Traffic Noise?
