I have a great book on Berlin between the wars with lots of fantastic pictures, primarily of the 'hot' spots of 1920's Berlin; nightclubs, hotels, bars, dens of iniquity, etc. I don't have a scanner but will ask some friends of mine if they can scan some pix to post to you. You could also rent some old movies that feature German settings to inspire you. I recommend any of the Fritz Lang movies, (esp. M) or even more recent films like Bob Fosse's Cabaret. Good Luck.

here are some inspirations of buildings i would like to see....

    nikolassee.jpg

this is Nikolassee station where I drove by every morning when i hadn't a car :D

    up_haus.jpg

this is a wonderful palazzo from a place called mexikoplatz

    b3_04_kadewe.jpg

this is a pic of our wonderful department store KaDeWe...it's the world's best in my opinion...^^
architecture seems not very interesting, but it is very detailed indeed...please leave the ugly annex building with the parking garage in the backyard out, if you model this building 9.gif

    Kudamm.jpg

THIS is one of the most fantastic buildings in the world ^^ i love this building and especially the glowing of the roof lighting in the night makes you dreaming :D (das ist das commerzbank-geb

The Hotel Adlon looks good so far. It's intresting to see that it has a flat roof on the top....Odd was right about the roofs.

Msg me your email if you still want some copper textures. I used a copper texture for the blue St Ritz building that looked about the same (same colour and brightnes) as the roof at the Hotel building.

I never make exact copies of buildings. The same ornaments that look good in the reality may look bad in the gameview. I suggest that you exagerate those details that you talked about.

You have two lot choices. One option is to make a corner building with two front facades. The other option is to make the whole block (about 6*6 tile big lot). I know that Vlakhaas will make some 6*6 lots that consists of many w2w buildings.

    Did You know...

That the Hotel Adlon building above is just a few years old? The Real adlon was built in the late 19th century and, surprisingly, survived the war. Afterwards, the russian Beaureau of Beaurocracy (or whatever) moved in. Unfortunately the building was then accidently damaged by fire and knocked down in the 60s. The old building was quite the same volume, but had only 5 stories and more elaborate onamnents.

If You think that the detailing on the facade is too shallow, maybe You could try to make more shades of the facade texture, and apply the darker one onto the walls and the lighter on the ornaments? Or did You do that already, i cannot see that really clear in the preview. If so, try to make the contrast more significant.

Also, the texture that You use is a bit noisy, the main parts of the facade is plaster on the real building so maybe a less blurry surface would make the ornaments come out better?

Last but not least, the ground floor has a different kind of wall texture, maybe that could be something to use in your model too?

I was so bored with scool so i made a few textures that you might want to use for the Adlon? They look ant-size here but they are more detailed in a close-up view and will work good in BAP 1.gif

It is really starting to look very promising! Maybe the roof texture needs to be darkened down a bit if You look at the render?

Hmm also the building now seem to be a bit low or sunken compared to the roof... maybe if You heigthened the bottom floor a meter or so the building would gain better proportions, those floors are usually taller than the rest.

Talking about Berlin, they have generlly a 22 meters maximum heigth of the facades from street level to the corniche, and almost every building in the main streets uses the allowed heigth to 100%. Over the 22 meters level the building has to lean back in at least 30 degrees angle - i e have a max. 60 degree steep roof or some structure that alike. The maximum heigth including roofs and everything is 30 meters.

The picture above is an untextured version :-) Of course the final version will look much different. I just tried to assign colors that are as close to reality as possible to get an impression of how it would turn out in the end.

    Wow Erdmoebel!!

A daring step. But one that I'm confident off you finishing it succesfully.

May I point out a few things?
your collums seem too short compared with the size of the stairs. the Reichstag is a building with ecceptionally high floors. This was to impress everyone with this institute of government. and the greatness of the empire. typical for governments. just look at the parliamental buildings in London, Paris, Washington and Vienna to name but a few. So I would ask you to consider making the building higher so it is at least higher than the staircase is wide.12.gif

Either way, I want to congratulate you. I remember your first building wich was more or less sabred down by some people because of it's lack of realism or beauty. Now look how you have established yourself as a reputable batter with a groing repetoire of apreciated bat's.21.gif

...well I think that it looks a bit under-scaled in some way too, I think it depends on the heigth of the seps in the stair. In this model, You enter the Reichstag in only 16 steps, which is normal for a stair between two stories in a house with only 2.6 meters in ceiling heigth. This stair should have about the double amount of steps to cope with the original. Comparing the stairs with the people in the pic, the original stairs seem to be 5 meters tall.

The stairs in the model are 8 meters high and 17 meters long. The gate (from the highest step) is 27 meters high so it already more or less fits your suggestions 1.gif I guess it looks out of scale because of the unfavorable camera angle. I think I

I increased the gates height by 8 meters and doubled the amount of stairs. I also found a website with the measurements of the building so this should be more or less to scale now:

    Wow, you work fast.

The stairs are a great improvement, and the height looks more to scale indeed. The building looks very imposing now, and that even without the corner pavillions.

    Good look with the progress.2.gif
