Where angels fear.

In the past, I've always used McAfee on windows machines. Hackers attack the anti-virus software just as much as they attack operating systems.

I think I may have a better idea. I don't know if you are doing this already, but I don't connect my personal PCs to the internet at all, at least whilst running Windows. If that stinking trash can't get to my computers, then I won't have to deal with it! 2.gif

Actually, old son, I don't even have a copy of the windows disks. I run Linux in various decors, and the recommended anti-virus system clam-av, freshclam, clamd, and the standard firewall (ufw).

I thought you were a MAC user. If you are running the current OS/X you can run wine to avoid running windows. Wine is not a windows emulator, but an on-the-fly call converter that changes windows calls to native calls as needed. The rest of the code just runs.

I believe that if you need to run a .NET program, you can run it with a module called mono (on Linux) which runs the same way. It has the on-the-fly CLI compiler needed to change the code into native mode.

Frankly, I can't be bothered with microtrash.

Anti-malware programs often have their own problems but most of the security problems with Windows is because their popularity. Mac/Apple viruses are on the rise as well as Linux because market share correlates with amount of malware aimed at a software product. I have used every version of Windows (even ME on a friend's computer) as well as 3 types of Macs with different operating systems. I started using Linux recently and because of the comparisons, I find Windows 7 the easiest and most comfortable OS to use.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

    Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

Well, you see there are still a few of us old reactionaries around who like to get down on the iron and scratch. Linux gives us the best access to the guts of the Operating System and the source code is published. For me, that is a comforting thought. If I really don't like something, I can pee in it until the flavor suits me.

With the marching morons of Redmond you have to take whatever pearls they cast before the swine.

Tbh, I use Macs on a day-to-day basis at home, and Windows at school. I have a PC I built myself, which I use to run Windows and Linux, since I find that more convenient, plus my regular Mac is currently a PowerPC, the one I am typing at. As I said, I would never usually connect my PC to the internet, unless it's for that gruelling activation process, licence keys, registration and the like. For that, I do use antivirus and so on.

In fact, I do find it easier, more convenient [for debugging and modifying] and better for my conscience that I run Windows on a machine it belongs on. It's good fun assembling your own tools as well!
