Well, according to this article: http://ph.she.yahoo.com/nasa-japan-release-improved-map-earth-153059612.html, we can get these heightmaps for free. It covers 99% of the Earth and can identify features up to 1km in radius. It is also purpoted to be the most accurate satellite terrain maps yet.

    Here's their website: http://www.ersdac.or.jp/GDEM/E/4.html

So, this post is really for a set of things I'd like to find out with this.

First, I can't seem to see where to download these maps. Any help would be appreciated.

Second, if these files are in .dem format, does that mean that I can use the normal procedure of using microdem to generate heightmaps and importing them to SC4?

Third, can this be used as a complement or supplement to SRTM data?

That is all. Any answers will be appreciated. Also, if this tip can help more than a few of you with maps, I'll be grateful.

    Hello

I've just tried to download from that site ( http://www.gdem.aste...r.jp/search.jsp )

    I got the files downloaded.

there are two files in the zip. one named "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.num.tif and the other xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.dem.tf

    (xxxxxxxxxxxxxx = Coordinates)

you will have to register before you can download anything.

The rest of the things you ask about i really don't know about)

Hope this helps a little bit.....
