Using a plugins folder in an alternate location - is it possible?

    I have a somewhat full hard drive that is cluttered with important documents, etc. and I really don't have room to throw away for my plugins folder that I am transferring. I have a USB thumb drive that I hope to use as my Plugins folder, and I was wondering if it is possible to edit a file that would point SC to this drive (or any other location other than the standard My Docs>Simcity 4>Plugins directory)? I have taken a look at a forum post over at SC4Devotion here, however I am not sure what to edit or whatever the procedure is. Is this possible? If so, any help is appreciated.

    Maybe... There is something in the Maxis\Simcity 4 Deluxe\Apps Folder. It is a notepad document:

    [Directories]

    Data=..\

    PlugIn=..\Plugins\

    Maybe if you changed plugins to whatever drive your flash drive is on it would work. It would require some experimenting.

    There's another way if you have Window xp/Vista/7, might be more difficult though. You can setup a Junction/Symbolic link between the actual folder and a "dummy" folder using Command Prompt, which will trick programs into thinking that the folder is in one drive when it's in another.

    Here's a guide on how to setup a link: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16226/complete-guide-to-symbolic-links-symlinks-on-windows-or-linux/

    Here's what I did (I have Window 7): https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/topic/46084-questions-regarding-region-and-plugin-folders/

    @jack3oh3 I tried tinkering with that .ini file you were talking about. it didn't work, but thanks anyway.

    The simplest way: add a parameter to the shortcut you use to start the game. The parameter is -UserDir:"<path>"

    e.g. -UserDir:"Q:\Game Files\My SimCity 4 Stuff\Another unnecessary subfolder\"

    The first time you launch with this shortcut the game will create the standard subfolders for Plugins, Regions, etc... and copy the default regions in (New York, Berlin, London, etc...). Just move your stuff into there. If you've built one of the default regions (e.g. Berlin) just delete the "fresh" one and replace it with your own.

    More details and useful parameters, such as high and/or custom resolutions and skipping the intro video, can be found here: Shortcut Parameters
