Some questions

Hi, as my Plugin folder gets fatter and fatter, I am starting to wander a few things...

1.

Is a fat plugin folder destined to have sluggish loading times? Though I didn't time, I suspect the loading times of the start-up and the map of my game together can take at least 3 minutes :boggle:

(though not very powerful, my laptop is at least an i-3 and 5470  )

2.

Do "functional" ploppable Business and Industry buildings really work? Having done my best to search in previous threads from LEX and STEX, I could not find solid conclusions as some say they do some don't.

I did do some tests (albeit probably not thorough enough) with the Functional Maxis Landmark mod, but I do not think I am seeing dramatic budget changes for building or bulldozing a CO$$$ 6925 CO$$ 11945 Bank of China :???:

The RCI demand is extremely quick to reflect its existence, however. Bank of China floors or spikes the CO$$$ demand in the blink of an eye.

Further, does a "growable residential" building plopped by plopbuilding command work? (I only know it doesn't work via mayor menu hence no ploppable R exists)

3.

Are there CJs using "dedgren Ploppable Waterfalls"?

Although I am satisfied with PEG, I am also quite interested in this one, and I wander if they blend well with PEG as I like variety :thumb:

1. You can reduce your loading times greatly by using the DatPacker. This also gets rid of almost all of the delay when switching out of the Zone View.

2. Yes, they do work if they're built properly. Plopped residential buildings will always abandon, however.

    1. DatPacker works like a charm :thumb: thx for the tip!

    2. Could you explain more please? How do I plop "properly" ?

BTW does anyone know how tax revenue of a single building is calculated in game so I can do some tests on my own too?

z1 meant in his second answer that if, for example, you plop a 10000-workers skyscraper in an agricultural village, it will obviously be abandonded and it will dilapidate. You have to plop commercial and industrial buildings wisely because they can unbalance your natural RCI demand drammatically.

If you are having "plugins bloat", think about whether you really need them. If you don't have a specific use for a plugin, what's it doing in your plugins folder?

About datpacker. Use it wisely. Think about what happens if you want to update one of the plugins in there.

Actually, what I have been doing is backing up all the unpacked folders and files to a USB stick and I do updates to my plugins folder a week at a time. I'll just download the files and updates, add them to the USB stick and dat pack a copy of what everything is in there once a week. Works perfectly. :)

^ A good technique. I would even go so far as to have more than one datpacked file by packing things up in sections. Some mods hardly ever change, but the more mobile ones and new ones need separate treatment.

Because I am on Linux, I can't use datpacker due to a problem with Python. I use ilive's files2dat instead, and it does save quite a bit. With a little work, it can function exactly like datpacker with the bonus that it is written in C.

You will probably see it used in Dedgren's Cj Three Rivers Region ;)
