This is the third "tough guy" death in four months. Should these guys have been examined after a fight instead of spending time in the sin bin?

Hmmm, difficult to say whether their style of playing is directly connected to their fatal endings. Correlation doesn't always equl causation. But it surely is interesting. Too bad though, to see that these guys had to meet with this end.

I think the fact that they're out of the game would be the cause of suicide over a wack to the head. I've never heard of the reason for suicide being a head injury.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. Well, you have now.

Meg, you even went to the antipodes for references. Well done.

they are still researching long term effects of Multiple Concussions. and what it does to the brain and behaviour.

Football, Hockey, boxing almost every player of these sports has

had multiple concussion's. not to mention all the soldiers comeing back

who have been to close to exposions or in vehicle crashes ect.

Multiple Concussions are very bad, so why would you start your kid in sports at 5?

If you don't start at the age of 5 and wait even a couple of years, you will never be as good as the kids who started at 5.

This one girl I knew signed up for hockey. She was 14. All the other people started playing at the age of 5. I believe she ended up quitting the team because she wasn't anywhere near as good, got very little ice time, and negative feedback from the rest of the team. Perhaps parents believe that starting their kids at a young age will make them better and make the game more enjoyable in the long-run.

Ok, hockey can be dangerous, so can other sports. So put your five-year old on the chess team if you want to be really safe. But, if you really want to protect your kid from danger, stop driving them around in your car. I can assure you more people are injured or killed in traffic than in sports. Just to put it in relation. On another note, I somewhere heard that horse riding was the most dangerous sport you could expose your child to, not sure about the facts about that one though.

The reason most parents start their kids early, besides peer pressure, is that the kid learns to skate, which is paramount ni hockey. Both my kids were in figure skating instead and when my son was about 9 years old, he went out for a hockey team. He could skate rings around most of the kids on the team and got a lot of ice time. After a couple of years, he quit because he was bored with it. My daughter went on to qualify as a skating instructor.

And by the way, if you think hockey is costly, my daughter's last pair of skates that we bought for her were $900. This doesn't include club membership, patch ice time, lessons, etc. Unfortunately she was injured in a skiing accident and had to stop skating because she could no longer jump without excruciating pain.

Oh yes I know, both figure skating and hockey have their expenses.

Oh yes I know, both figure skating and hockey have their expenses.

One of the interesting things that happened when my kids were in figure skating. The club they were in ran a skating school for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team was much better and less scrambly on the ice after a week of intensive how-to-really-skate. After that, for a while, they were no longer the Toronto Maple Loafs.

When my son was in the Moms and Tots program at the skating club, he used to skate with an older guy who thought he was rather a natural skater. They met every week for a while and just skated around. The old guy turned out to be Punch Imlach.

Some of the serious figure skaters took ballet lessons too. It is amazing how inter-related physical activities are, and how they benefit from each other. You can be sure that the world level skaters have had their share of dancing lessons.

And I thought you canadians could skate from birth...Well, it sure helps to start early, even though I think you can still get to the professional level if you start later than age 5. I read somewhere that you have to spend 10 000 hours to become top class at anything, so I guess starting reasonably early is profitable. On topic: wasn't there a rather biased study done in the days after Ali's career had ended that somehow showed that there was no connection between blows to the head and permanent injuries, and that that study was later blown to pieces by a better study.

Very many. After 60+ years the NFL finally admitted there may be a correlation between multiple concussions and complications later in life.

Think about it. If you get your bell rung several times a month, don't you think you would have ringing in your ears?

A concussion occrus when the brain is slammed against the skull. Normally it is floating in cerebrospinal fluid. Don't you think this delecate tissue gets bruised and scarred as a result of this? Surely the effect can be cumulative?

Helmets don't do the trick, either. All that does is protect the skull, not the brain.

Violence in sport, and especially professional sport including U.S. style football, is just taking our young people and beating their brains in. I'd rather throw them to the lions.

Agreed, and as long as we are, we cannot pretend to be a civilized social society.

However, if you want violent sports, let them be played by adults who have the sense to know what they are getting into. Junior level hockey, football, etc. should be less violent, and maybe some of the more violent actions should be outlawed on pain of being separated from the sport.

The Romans maybe had it right. Keep the plebs happy by publicly executing some criminals, and allow real fights between gladiators. Just make sure you don't have Caligula running the games. Do you think murderers should be condemned to the arena? Bring on the lions.
