Airport capacity..

Good afternoon SimTropolis. I have a small problem regarding my airport capacity. I've got a medium-sized city with around 90.000-100.000 inhabitants, which'll probably force me to build the small municipal airport. The smaller one has too less of a capacity yet the bigger one has a capacity exceeding far beyond what my city needs as far as I know. However.. I've reserved a small island for the airport, connected it to the mainland by a bridge, hooked it up with some wind mills, water towers etc. I even build a fire station and police station to make sure nothing gay happens.

ACTUAL PROBLEM: the capacity isn't being used whatsoever. It keeps stating zero whereas I'm sure I have sufficient water and power, police and firefighters coverage and I even build a little park for welcoming visitors. The airport and my mainland are within the same.. City boundaries I guess ? I'm not a noobass who'd build a airport in a different region from where I have my cities. Maybe I have to build my airport on my mainland ? I have no idea, I'd rather build it on the small island because I feel like my city looks really nice with the bridge and airport apart from the busy mainland. Does anyone have a hint, tip or w/e to solve this capacity problem for me ? I can leave it there useless and just for decoration because my city's income exceeds my spending stuff by far, but I'd rather have it function well =(.

Please help, and thank you for reading this. You guys are sweet, no homo =X.

Kind regards,

Tomasuuuuuuuu.

Welcome to the Conversation.

Airports are not commuter items. They are essentially eye-candy and ceiling raisers for Commercial capacity. Having an island airport is rather a nice idea, but don't expect an excessive amount of traffic to it unless you also surround it with an "airport settlement". Be careful of building anything higher than one or two storeys off the ends of the runways.

Nonono that's not what I meant, but I can recall myself building airports in the past and whenever I used the question mark thingy to gain info on the airport it'd say the capacity used is 17.908 par exemple, with 53.600 available if I'm not mistaken. Now it just states 0, whereas my available (And therefore wasted capacity) is the same 53.600.

And what do you mean with 'airport settlement' ?

And what do you mean with 'airport settlement' ?

Airports usually attract commercial business and some manufacturing. These, in turn, attract residential for people working there. If you have no land for this, terraform some.

Now if you airport is not well-connected to your commercial zones in the main city, you won't get any traffic going there to use the 'port. It is only used by commercial travelers and the few Sims who work there. If you are getting 0 usage, check your paths from the commercial zones.

That's quite useful information, since I've only connected it to some residential zones and a small part of my commercial centre.. Uhm some of my coastlines aren't useful for making bridges, can I use a ferry too or not ?

Absolutely. You can use car/passenger ferries, but I actually prefer to keep cars off an island of that nature and only use passenger ferries with parking on the mainland and either bus or subway on the island. Airports are dirty enough without a lot of traffic. Don't forget that airports are hotbeds of crime. You'll need a cop shop and the 'Crime doesn't pay' modd.

Y'know, monorail is a very pretty idea going to an airport.

Loved the monorail idea, haven't thought about that at all. However, isn't it sufficient to just place a small police station to cover the airport territory and it's surroundings instead of using a MOD ? I prefer not to, since I like to play the game with as less MODS as possible.

That modd is a bug fix. The police lack vigor in the standard game, and do a bad job of protecting hot areas like airports.

There are two other bug fixes: the Opera House, and the Mayor's house.

There are also two default plugins for props that everyone assumes you have.

    BldgProp_Vol1 and _Vol2.

If you use any custom content, you should have these.

Airport usage is determined by the amount of your commercial areas that are connected to your airport by road. No other types of connections count for this purpose.

Excuse the double post (connection problems at this end). Unfortunately Simtropolis won't let me delete either of them.
