I don't know if you are allowed to advertise your videos here, so if I am doing something terribly wrong, please alert me.

I have a couple of videos on youtube, and all of my cities use no mods/no cheats. So I wanted to see what people here thought of them. I'll answer any questions and give advise on what I can in regards to this style of play.

This one is the newer of the two videos I posted.

Also this is a general no mod/no cheat thread.

Your cities look very good, repetition was slight, and the region looked natural, and interesting. However, as many people on ST have played SC4 for a long time, we have gotten bored of the common "Maxis" content. You're city is very good, and is at the top of the line for vanilla (un-modded) SC4, but it could be better with some mods, and other custom content. ;)

Just throwing in my two cents...

This one was a bit easier to start than my first city.

But basically I started on the penisula and built it out to the maximum then let it spill over onto the larger side. Except on the penisula (which is the older original city) the highways where built along with part of the monorail system BEFORE the development.

In regards to the look, I used a lot of medium and low residential, and used minimal amounts of large high density plots, espcially for commercial.

    1. As a base, I would suggest the highly reccomeneded and widely accepted NAM, or, Network Addon Mod. The Windows version has mysteriously disappeared from the STEX (again), but you can either wait for its return, or download the Mac version version and install it manually. (Assuming you have Windows, and not Mac in the first place) I would also suggest the RHW (Real Highway Mod), NWM (Network Widening Mod), RAM (Railway Addon Mod), HSRP (High Speed Rail Project), and SAM (Street Addon Mod). These all add a lot of new transportation infrastructure options, increasing the realism of the game. They also can increase the capacities of some of the vanilla transportation options: Road, for example, making traffic problems less of a pain in the keister. Here is a link to a list of the Top Ten Mods, suggested by Livin In Sim. I would agree with the list, and reccomend it to anyone. On top of all this, here is a list of BATters whos' creations I admire and reccomend:

    1. PDA

    2. oneil_1

    3. DuskTrooper

    4. Murmik

    5. Andreas Roth

    6. Cobb32118

    7. altuditu

    8. roe99

    9. Bixel

    10. Haarlemmergold

    11. Aaron Graham

    12. Equinox

    13. ILL Tonkso

    14. Mattb325

    15. Paeng

    16. d_j_p1

    17. Pegasus

    18. nycc06

In reality, it all comes down to personal preference. What you want for you city. Try looking around on the STEX, and maybe the LEX on SC4D.

    Hope this helps. Cheers! :thumb:

If you are going to start using plugins, go slow.

First, you need a maintenance strategy so that you can install updates without having to do too much work. Create a Downloads folder outside the game, and inside that, as you add each download, stash it in some easily identified sub-folder. You can then unpack the .zip file using windows explorer (right click and follow your nose) in place. Then move only the plugin files to your Plugins folder in the Documents/Simcity 4 ... folder in a set of subfolders corresponding to your Downloads folder. This way, you can always find things.

Some downloads contain an installer, which you should use if you are on windows. If you are on MAC, there is usually a separate download for MAC that omits the installer and you have to do a manual installation. With installers, pay close attention to any options. If you are on Linux/wine, use the windows installer under the wine protocol.

If you need the NAM is can also be found on SC4Devotion's LEX (two free registrations), if it is not here, but I don't know why it would not be. Look in the Transit thread to find all the gory details.

Every new plugin should be tested before it is considered to be part of your working Plugin suite. Not all plugins dance together. Because of the number of these, it is impossible for anyone except the final user to test this.

After you have made the download, unpack it, and install it with the balance of your suite. Then open your sandbox region, pick a city and devise a means of testing the new plugin. If it doesn't work as specified, remove it. Reading the documentation is always necessary to make sure, among other things that you have all the dependencies, and that you understand what you have.

To make a sandbox, simply open the game and create a new region called "sandbox" and accept the default layout. This is also a good place to test ideas for your actual cities before you undertake something that may mess things up.

And do remember to do in-game saves (CTRL+s) frequently especially if you are using puzzle pieces.
