i'm still very much a beginner at SC4, so i'm still figuring out how to even make a simple grid-style city work well (sigh). i'd been using 6x6 lots, alternating roads and avenues. this worked ok until i'd start upgrading zones to high density, then i'd run into problems trying to cram in transit without bulldozing important junk. soooo....i'm going to try this out:

i'm trying to leave plenty of space for civics, parks, landmarks and transit, as well as encouraging traffic to stick to avenues more than roads. here's my big question: am i going to regret using so many roundabouts and underpasses later on?

and a couple of minor questions:

i'm assuming that a building facing the underpass ramps won't count as having road access. is that right?

so far all those lots are 1x3, 2x3, and 3x3. i don't have many custom skyscrapers downloaded yet, so what size zones will allow the larger maxis buildings to grow?

hmmm....i think that's about all i wanted to ask. but if you want to reccomend a favorite author for growables, feel free. i've browsed through stex and lex, but there's just sooooo much stuff. it's hard to know where to even begin. :golly:

thanks in advance :)

If you ever need more room in your city, you can simply bulldoze the underpasses and/or roundabouts and replace them with regular intersections. The only time you might regret them is when you want to do this. It could affect your traffic patterns in a bad way.

Looks good, but if the city gets more crowded you can add the GLR on the avenues to get some of the cars of the road.

I also use this layout myself:

I personally do large blocks. 6x10, or bigger. I use Road Top Mass Transit for my mass transit needs, thus eliminating the "Bulldoze half the city" problem:

    https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?board=261.0

    It requires NAM:

    https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/26585-network-addon-mod-nam-for-windows/

The largest Maxis buildings come in adorable 4x4 sizes, most of those stage 7/8. Custom content can come much, MUCH bigger, such as 15x15 (Or bigger!). Most of those, however, are only usefully functional* with the Colossus Addon Mod:

    https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?board=185.0

If you want skyscraper forests, this is your mod. It's not for the faint of heart, and the currently available version has a few annoying bugs. Worth it? Not for you, at the moment, I think. You're still new to the game. CAM is more for people who've played the game for years and have gotten bored of the available Maxis content and limited large custom content. Still...it's there if you're interested.

*Most large buildings available on the STEX are either non-functional landmarks or have much lower capacity than their size indicates due to the game having problems growing buildings with jobs/residents over 6,000.

but if you want to reccomend a favorite author for growables, feel free.

Search DuskTrooper and Bixel on the STEX. EXCELLENT buildings. Dusktrooper's made some of the largest skyscrapers available (Growables), and Bixel has dozens/hundreds of medium/large buildings available for download; his Pencil Towers are awesome.
